Increasingly intimate hugs?

At first when I hugged him it was like he didn’t put his hands on me at all but over the next few months, first he pressed a hand on my back during a hug, then the next time was a full on two arm embrace with a mini back rub, then the next time was the same thing but with an added snuggle-like thing on my neck…

And then we posed for a photo and we had our arms around each other and I just moved my fingers on his side in a tiny little squeeze and he had his hand around my side like halfway up my ribs and he did the same thing to me.

Is this intentional? If a guy has a crush on you will they slowly do more and more subtle intimate things to test the waters with you or am I imagining it?
