I find there are many people who tends to hate icebreakers trite enough from movies, books. So do they work in real world to approach a girl with.

If it's one I've heard before then it's gonna be ultra cringe. Most are, but I'm also a sucker for bad puns and that would be a great ice breaker for me personally. Having confidence and a sense of humor will work way better than a preplanned cheesy icebreaker.
