Mixed signals through text but in person very flirty?

So i've known this guy for a bit over a year, we got really close last year, lost contact then was at a tennis event together for 10days recently and hung out almost everyday as well as text everyday and got close again. In person he's super flirty and touchy with me, would sit next to me on the couch legs touching i steal his phone and he would lay on me to get it off of me he would steal my phone. We would muck around throwing balls at each other he pulled out my pony tail for fun, he teases me about my height and about my ability to be a good 'teacher' (we'll call it teacher even though its more of a coach thing that we did together) and all that jazz. One night i was lying on the couch sitting up right but slouching and he comes and sits net to me and says "you seem sad" and I was like "nah just tired" and he slouches back with me and i had my head on his shoulder watching reels with him. one reel said "I used to be jealous of dora for having a talking monkey but then i remembered I have you" and he said to me "that's you to me, you're my little talking monkey" and i just smirked. But the thing is all this is cute but he SUCKS when it comes to texting, like sometimes it will be silly texting and flirting but other times he's just bland but then in person he's all fun and flirty with me again. Guys help please, what does this mean? also we were talking to other kids about our dating age range and i said i'd go 5 years older and then paused and then he said "go on then, how many years younger" and I was like "well it depends" then one of the friends in our group asked me how old I was and i said ** and he pointed at the guy, then at me and was like "huhhhh? yeahhh?" and then the guy and i looked at each other and we were both like "seriously" with like our head back and u know that look. so I don't know what this all means, i'm too scared to ask cause if he says he doesn't like me that way it will ruin our friendship.
