Or there's one big splash and you hope no ones watching.

I grew up knowing it as skipping stones, as opposed to skimming stones. Skimming means something very different here.
I’m actually pretty good. I only found out a couple years ago that there are fairly major competitions for skipping stones. I learned about it by finding an article about “cheating” at the world championships. 😂😂😂 No joke, but it’s still pretty funny!
If i had known there were competitions, i might have gone for it. My personal best is fourteen skips that i could count and the stone traveled probably fifty yards before i couldn’t track it anymore. When i was skipping a lot, ten was pretty common.
Unfortunately for me the record was nearly a hundred. I’m not THAT good. 😂😂😂
When much younger, my friends and I used to have contests to see who could get the most skips o na small pond near my home. The water surface was almost always very clam, like a plate of glass. If I remember correctly, best I ever had was 24 skips. Of course, it was more typical to have 7 or 8 skips.
The key is finding the perfect stone, flat on the bottom, about the size of your palm, not too heavy, and slightly convex on top, which apparently helps the aerodynamics (air flow). You throw it slightly elevated from horizontal between your thumb and pointer finger, causing it to rotate.
Omg, I've not done this in forever, but back when I was a kid my father would take me and my siblings to this lake; we'd go fishing, swimming, and hiking the trails. Well one of our favorite pastimes was skipping stones.
I really struggled with it at first, but my dad told me that if I could get 5 skips, he'd get us all ice cream. And your girl was determined! I got 7 skips, and we all got ice cream, lol.
Omg, that guy is good! Mine usually make the big splash. 😳 I had no idea it was a sport! 🤣

I'm a GenX. The defining feature of GenX is that we were sent outside to play as kids, not to return until the street lights came on. No one cared what we did, as long as we were outside and not making noise or messes inside the house.
So, when we weren't riding bikes or skateboards or building something or playing war or climbing trees, we were out exploring, and lakes and creeks were central territories for exploration and adventure. To put it plainly, we spent a lot of time around the water, which naturally means that we skipped a lot of rocks across the water.
It was even better when we went camping near an active river, because that's where you found an endless supply of flat, round, smooth rocks perfect for skipping. My record stands at 13 skips, though my godmother's son, who was like an older brother to me growing up, managed 14.
Yes.
I have more success with it when I intentionally do it the wrong way, oddly enough.
YES I can skim a stone across water & I can also skim water across a stone.
Yes, I’m very talented. You throw it side armed hitting the top of the water and it skips several paces at fast speeds The Rock hitting the water i’ve done that many times with success
yeah... we used to do that sometimes, after some heavier rains that would cause flooding
and the stones didn't even need to be that flat either... lol
Sure can!! And, it doesn't have to be a skinny flat stone!
I go to a beach that has lots of flat rocks. I do this all the time.
Start with flat stones and you will eventually do it in 5 minutes or so
I've done it a couple of times. I'm not very good at it. Maybe one hit and nine miss?
I'm American, it's skip a rock across the water. But yes, I can do it quite well...
I tried this many times and I just can't do it! 😪
The hell yeah ever since my Dad taught me as a kid
Yes easily. Have done it in my childhood several times. 😊
Never tried.
Yes I can.
But not very far.
Yep lots of fun!
