Is he flirting or just messing with me?

I was hanging out with this guy I like, mind you in a public setting. We playfully argue a lot, that’s kind of my love language. He did something so I teased him saying “you’re such a terrible friend” or something along those lines, it’s a joke and he knows that.

So he then looks me dead in the eye, gets this mischievous grin and says “just admit it, you love me. You know you love me”.

I didn’t know what to say because there were other people around and even his little brother standing there starts adding commentary. And I wasn’t actually admitting anything but all the good comebacks I have now were not in my head in that moment.

When he said that I just felt my face heat up, I looked at the ground and shook my head. Still seeing out of the corner of my eye that he was enjoying my reaction.

But this isn’t the only time he’s said that. Recently someone wrote an article about a project he’d done. He was showing it to me and within it the writer talked about influence and said he was well liked by his peers. My friend was looking at it and said “I feel like that’s a lie”. She looked at me and asked “as his peer, do you like him?” I said “him? No way! He’s terrible”. I then looked at him and smiled, this is just how we’ve always been around each other. He looked at me, looked away for a second then looked back and said “awwwww, you don’t like me because you love me!”

I can’t tell if it’s just our normal arguing or if he keeps making these comments and means something by it. Or I’m overthinking it, I’m not sure.
