"Would it be OK if I asked you out sometime?"...Why ask this?

Why do people, before asking someone out, sometimes ask "Would it be OK if I asked you out sometime?"? I just watched the very first episode of Friends where Ross says that to Rachel. I mean, isn't that a mood killer? Why do people ask that to someone they wanna ask out because then won't they be expecting you to ask them out in the future? Not to mention the fact that they already know you now like them and may even wanna play a few games with you.

I think it's just a phrase people use when they don't know how to ask you out. Ross is a classic bungler when it comes to flirting and dating. Did you ever see the episode where he tries to flirt with the pizza delivery girl?

Completely guilty of something similar myself, actually. Not gas, but manure. Much more classy. Sigh.

I'm completely guilty of this too. My problem is that I don't really know how to talk to women in general so I end up talking to them but most of the conversations I end up having are friendly conversations where I end up getting to know them. Those kind of conversations don't really attract women unfortunately.

That's not quite true. It just doesn't attract *shallow* women. The rest of us are able to think in complex sentences and everything, lol.

Hhaha I just watched that episode too ... maybe it's an American thing ... I've never been pre asked out ... that's just testing the water without asking properly it's not very romantic

Yeah it's quite silly in my opinion. Overly polite and probably more of a turnoff then a turn on. :p
