How to tell if a guy is desperate?

Backstory:

I'm not the best with relationships and always antsy that the guy is just desperate and using me until he can get with the girl he really likes (which is usually the case).

In other news there is this guy from another area which I met over Facebook and have been talking to for about a week now. We're arranging a meetup soon and he already calls me things like beautiful and such. I'm just very worried that he's desperate because it is all moving very fast and we never even met in person. So please, how do you tell if a guy is just desperate for a girlfriend?

Desperation could be confused with him just being into you. Getting involved in a relationship with a guy from Facebook you've never met smells a little like desperation on both ends, but then again, people want that so badly they look everywhere for it. It's reasonable to worry about it moving to fast, especially if you haven't met, so set your limits. Take in the beautiful comments and be flattered, but don't let it get uncomfortable, or let that get you in a mindset to be taken advantage of. Don't have it in your mind that a guy is just using you just because that has been the case in the past. You're a pretty girl and you shouldn't worry about it so much. Meeting in person will probably be very helpful in determining how sincere he really is.

if he's trying to contact you frequently. that can be a sign,so if a guy is desperate it means he will try to use you until he finds something better? I just thought it meant he wanted to have sex, and feel good.

My apologies. I used desperate for lack of a better word to describe the situation. I guess the phrase "desperate for a girlfriend" would be better than simple "desperate"?

"Cute" and "pretty" would be the words I would pick at an early stage. If he always needs to know where you are, tells you romantic things before you are even on a date, or other things like that, those are some ways.
