Is it weird to go to a bar alone?

There's actually three questions in here, so please read the whole thing:

I'm sort of new in town and would like to meet some girls, but don't really have any guy friends to go to bars with.

So, if I go alone, what exactly should I do while I'm waiting for the opportunity to talk to someone? I don't go to bars much...

Also, extended question for girls: If you go to a bar with a few girls and see a guy by himself, does having your friends with you deter you from approaching the guy?

Chat to bartenders, please around the bar etc. Whatever you do, don't ever offer to buy a girl a drink. What I like to do is go up to them and ask them a question about something. Pretend that your sisters birthday is coming up or something and you want advice of what to get her. Say that she has a similar style to your sister and would like some advice on what to get her. After that you can talk about many other things. That's only one of many ways to get talking to a girl.

If you sit at the bar alone for too long then people will know you are alone but that still isn't a problem unless you look depressed and bored out of your mind,

Since your new in the area, meeting girls will be even easier. You can just start by saying to them that you are new in town and would like to meet new people. There's nothing creepy or wrong with approaching a girl this way. Most girls are actually really helpful and would be more than happy to take you on a tour around town. But good luck :)

I've had a quick drink once or twice, mainly when travelling.

Only times I've gone to a bar solo for longish duration was to take in a UFC card or something similar.

Nothing wrong with it at all and something any decent bartender should pick up on and try to make conversation with you. The most important thing when sitting alone is try to make it look like you are alone out of choice not compulsion. As for approaching a lone guy when with my friends, would never happen. Simply because I don't like the constant questioning from them, it may be intimidating for him and if there is a group of us together its most likely I wouldn't even notice him.

By the way try to position yourself near the taps, its the one place people are always drawn to when trying to get served and by simply calling the bartender (who you've been speaking to and gained their name) it can start a conversation without really putting yourself out there.

Just sit down and have a drink. Sit down at the bar and strike up a conversation with the bartender or someone nearby. Small chit chat with people won't deter woman from noticing you. I personally am more likely to go talk to a guy when he's alone at the bar. It's a lot less intimidating because it's a one on one kind of thing. If I'm with friends that won't stop me because more then likely we're discussing the cute guy alone at the bar and who's gonna have the nerve to talk to him first.

Id feel way to uncomfortable approaching a guy. He could easily be in a relationship, respond rudely, respond dismissively, etc. I'd probably do it if I was interested enough though whether I was with friends or not.

I don't go to bars alone at all. It sounds like it will be quite challenging to make new friends there especially if you are alone. Are you planning on approaching a groupd of girls or girls who are there by themselves?

Wow. I thought you were a girl looking to meet new people at a bar. That's why my answer may seem weird. My ex went to bars alone all yhe time haha. I think that's normal for guys

Yes it would deter me from approaching a guy with my friends.

If you came over smiled and asked if I'm having a good night and take the convo from there I would keep talking to you.

I would find it a bit weird to see a guy by himself, but I think you should play on being mysterious/loner category girls like that!

People go to bars to talk so if you go long enough you'll start a conversation unless you're rude or only speak Klingon and Norwegian.

The makeup of your group or lack thereof is really irrelevant.
