A female acquaintance I sit next to in one of my classes was worried about a midterm exam of hers. I said " don't worry too much about it. You're smart. You'll do fine". afterward she sort of blushed and smile then responded with "Thanks".

She was flattered by your compliment. She may not usually get recognized or reassured about things so it made her really happy that you complimented her. It's not really anything more than that. She could like you, and be glad that you see that in her but that's a big assumption since there's anymore information.

Well she is generally on the more attractive side, and she's also majoring in physics. She seems like more of the silent loner type. Quiet and usually sits at the back corner of the class. We've generally talked before about normal boring casual stuff. The compliment just came out causally also so it wasn't anying random. She just seemed stressed is all.

some girls even very pretty ones don't get many complments so something small might make them blush.

I complmented a girl recently and she blushed too so I don't think it's all that rare just uncommon.
