What's the difference between being merry and drunk?

How can you tell whether you are just merry or drunk? As I think I was only merry but my mum is saying I was drunk lol

When you know you're not "straight" anymore, but you're not shitfaced, you're just merry or "feeling good". Drinking more beyond that, you get shitfaced. That's not good.

Being merry is being happy, being drunk is being drunk. You might be happy while being drunk, but that's not going to change the fact that you were intoxicated.

You don't need to be insanely loopy and falling over yourself, you can have a "buzz" and be drunk.
