What do you do when it's too hard and you know it's going to tear a hole?

We've all been there, you're ready to spread and enjoy the creamy salty goodness but it's rock hard. Obviously you don't want it soft but this is too hard to handle and you feel its going to tear a big hole.

So when you want to spread your butter but it's too hard, what do you do?
