People who don't tip - how do you do it?

Tell me your secrets. Aren't you worried that you'll get your food spat in if you return to the same restaurant?

I've become more aware of the farce that is tipping, but I still can't get myself to work up the courage to not tip. How can I be more like you?

Also, poll only for no-tippers. Do you really never tip or are you just more picky about when you tip?

I really don't ever tip anybody.

I very rarely tip - only if someone truly goes above and beyond for me.

I somewhat rarely tip - as long as they actually provide good service and don't just do the bare minimum.

I’ve always tipped well. Even if the service wasn’t great, I would still never leave $0.

i work in the tipping industry myself but I’ve always been a decent tipper even more I started.
I agree that it’s ridiculous that restaurants don’t pay their workers a decent wage but I don’t feel the need to punish the waiter over it. Not tipping isn’t going to change the way the restaurant industry works, it just fucks up the income of workers who are just trying to make a living.

It would change the industry when restaurants have a hard time retaining chefs and servers. The only way restaurants get away with the status quo is because of tipping culture.

If would drive servers away from the industry if they consistently got $0 tips on all their tables.
But that will never happen. I get stiffed from tables here and there, but even with a few bad tips I still make good money from all my other tables. A couple people not tipping wouldn’t make me quit.
What would make me quit if they got rid of the tipping system and I made minimum wage instead lol. I would quit instantly cause I currently make way more than minimum wage.
I think if they were to change it and everyone stopped tipping, restaurants would be understaffed.
I also think quality of service would go down too. Cause then you’ll have a bunch of workers who don’t care to give good service because they’re making the same amount of money regardless.
I never been there myself but I heard service sucks in places like England bc they don’t rely on tips

That's exactly what I mean. Restaurant wages are lousy because of tipping culture. You and every restaurant worker I've ever talked to have said the only reason you stay is because of tips.
As far as quality of service goes, I'm not entirely convinced of that. I think service would improve if people had a steady solid paycheck every day that wasn't entirely dependent on the whims of customers.
The service I've received while traveling in Europe has been good, but that's anecdotal.

Unless the service is really bad I always leave a tip. Right after covid my wife and I went out to eat for the first time in a year. The service was horrible and we could hear other people complain about it too. It was because the restaurant could not find enough waitresses so they were swamped. I still left a good tip.

i stopped tipping unless at a restaurant because i feel like i have to. i just don't care anymore. i'm so sick of people begging for tips. on literally everything. because they put a pastry in a bag or something? like, i get it. but some service is just not meant for a tip. you are doing your job and getting paid either way...

Best advice would be live in a country where staff are payed livable wages and don't depend on tips to survive. I've never tipped before in my life and it's not expected here

I usually tip, but i also live in germany where service staff gets paid reasonable wages and its just a bonus.

I always tip. Its usually always 15-20 percent. If they do a poor job maybe only 10 percent. If they do spectacularly maybe 30 percent.

Interesting. My experience has been the opposite. When tips are expected, the service is poor and slow because they know that they can do the bare minimum and still get 15%-25%.
