Do you think it's rude for a person to ask for a tip?

Situation: I have a membership to a spa, which is $150/month. So after I got my lashes and brows done, the husband who owns the place as I was on my way out asked ," Did you want to leave a tip?" I personally felt it was rude. Like dude, if you don't see me offering, don't ask. I literally have 150/month membership, yet you're still asking for a tip wtf.

Yeah, that does seem pretty rude of the guy to outright ask you for a tip like that. Like you said, you already pay a membership fee every month so I wouldn't expect them to then be hitting you up for more money on top of it.

Most places that do stuff like spa treatments or haircuts, they don't usually ask for a tip directly. They'll just leave a tip jar or something if people want to toss some cash in. But to ask you like that is kinda pushy and makes it awkward. Like now you feel obligated even if you didn't plan on it before.

I'd probably be kinda annoyed too in your situation. They should be happy with the monthly membership money since that's a deal already. Next time he asks, you gotta be like "nah man I already pay a bunch each month, don't need to pay extra." Maybe even complain to the owner or switch to a different spot if he keeps it up. No one wants to feel like they're being hustled after every visit. Lame of him for sure.

Exactly! And the membership is up in March. He can have his little petty win for now. But I'll have the Ultimate victory by leaving them clientless. Loss of income for the establishment. There is already a shit load of people in the beauty profession in my area they have to complete with. They should do better business to avoid losing clients. Yeah , it was very pushy.

Yeah, I agree completely! That was so wack of the owner to ask you like that. Like you paid your membership fee already, why you gotta tip too? So disrespectful. March isn't that far away either, so just ride it out til then with no tipping and then BOOM - peace out, don't renew!

That'll show him, losing a whole client. Hope it puts a dent in his wallet. Like you said, tons of other beauty spots to go to around here anyway, so it's not like they can afford to be pushing people away. Maybe next time he'll think twice before putting clients on the spot and asking for extras they didn't sign up for.

And you know what, I'd definitely tell other people about what went down too, so they know not to mess with that spot. Gotta look out for each other and spread the word when businesses are acting shady like that. Dude had it coming, trying to hustle a membership client. Smh, stay in your lane! You did the right thing not caving. Respect.

Yes, it’s absolutely rude af. Everyone expects a tip these days just for doing their job. It’s absolutely ridiculous. I’ll do you one better: I was at a coffee shop one time, getting coffee for me and a few coworkers. I paid for the order, and there was a dollar and some change owed back to me. This girl takes the money, and throws in the tip jar herself. I was so shocked my jaw almost dropped to the floor. You should never assume a customer doesn’t want their change. THEY make that decision, you don’t make it for them. I was gonna tip $5 anyway, but since she took it upon herself to do that, she’s not getting a god damn penny. I reported her to the manager, and he gave me a free gift card because of it. I was livid, I was about two seconds away from jumping across the counter and strangling her. The entitlement of some people is unbelievable.

You usually only pay tips to employees when you are satisfied with their service, because they are on salary and probably don't make much.

But you generally don't give tips to the owners of the business because they don't have to split cost of the service they provide.

That husband was a money grubbing ass hole. And he was rude. It's not like he was asking if you forgot. He was flat out hitting you up; trying to shame you into handing him more dough.

The tip was for his wife, who is the employee. She provided the service. At the time, she wasn't working the register because she had to get to another client. So she said, "john doe," which is her husband, who will ring me out. So, I was giving him appointment dates in advance. Then I said okay thanks happy holidays.""" As I was walking out the door, he went , "Did you want to leave a tip?" Yes , I agree he is rude, and he is going to end up sabotaging that business. I like the wife's work, but his approach was terrible. I am definitely looking elsewhere. I'm going to finish this membership out and be done. After 6 months, you can cancel. I believe I'm like 3 months in.

Different situation but when I was in my mid-twenties a friend of mine and I were listening to live music in the bar area of an upscale restaurant. During the show we picked up and moved to a different table for some reason. The cocktail waitress created some sort of scene because we didn't leave a tip. But we only moved tables and weren't about to leave at all. It was dumb of her to act that way. I actually sent a letter to the manager and he sent a huge letter of apology and told me to call him, which I did. He offered me and a date a free night of dining there (but I didn't take him up on it). Trust me this was an upscale place but I didn't want to capitalize on the situation. LOL... Nice of him to offer that though. Anyway a much different situation with you, since the guy hustling the tips was the owner!

Not sure if she got fired. It wasn't my intent. However, a few months later I was having dinner at another restaurant, and she was the waitress! I kind of doubt that got her fired from the upscale place, but perhaps there were other issues. Funny to recall this stuff from so long ago. Just stayed in my mind.
