My experience living in America is that tap water is often suspect. Generally people buy water with a water cooler being in some houses but what's Generally common is people drinking cool aid, coffee, gatoraide or soda. I'm a big believer in drinking water and the health benefits. Also tea, I love tea. Americans don't know how to make tea.
