If the cake is overly moist and dense like pie, that usually means too much oil.


If it became dense but dry and crumbly, not enough oil.


Idk…those are the only two cake mistakes I’ve ever seen other than walking in on my little brother covered head to toe in flower and cocoa doing his best to make a cake using a cookie recipe.

Vanilla cake is not one I've made for a very long time, although my husband has and says it's actually one of the easiest recipes ever.

He's puzzled has to how you've made any mistakes!

Did you give it enough time to rise like a cake should? If you used a mix from a box, it would have had the appropriate ingredients to make it rise. If you did everything from scratch, I think yeast is one of the ingredients you need (I'm no cake expert) but if the yeast was forgotten (or too old), the cake may not have risen, in which case it would have the consistency of a pie.
