Probably because it's expensive and generally reserved for people who can afford it. I'm not talking about stuff you buy in your local wallmart in giant juice boxes. I'm talking stuff that's aged for decades. Wine has a whole thing about tasting, cheese too. Basically it's reserved for the wealthy elites, the kind of people who own property in Martha's vineyard and have the national guard forcibly remove illegal immigrants so their house prices don't drop.

@LiamSawyer well people dont drink alcohol just for the flavor. a vast majority of them drink it to get intoxicated. if it taste better thats just a huge cherry on top. and i have tasted expensive wines and i know how good they taste, but drinking it does not make anyone classy. sure its sophisticated in a way but why wouldn't it be considered sophisticated then?

seeing as classy has a more broad meaning, you would think its poorly used when someone thinks they classy for drinking wine, or taking an instagram pic of themselves drinking wine and hashtagging it #classy.

There are some excellent wines out there for under $20. Elitist people who think good wine has to come with a high price are rarely able to tell good wine from bad once you remove the label.

I've had an 1982 Chateau Lafite Rothschild and a 1984 Dom. Most would agree those are "good." I said "has to come with a high price". I didn't say there are no good expensive wines. There are countless wines scoring 99 or 100 that retail for under $75, which is certainly not expensive. I've probably 200 of those in storage. If you look at Georgian wines there are quite a number of gems that aren't sold in high quantities abroad from soil that's produced wine since 6000BC. The Marlborough region puts out quite a few good whites for "daily occasion" prices. I've drank with two Masters of Wine who agreed with me. The last of which is who put me on to Marlborough region wines. Might I recommend starborough sauvignon blanc as an afternoon refresher. Most wine lovers find it quite enjoyable, or if you want something a little funkier, Releaf is quite fun.

You can literally pick up any issue of Wine Enthusiast and get similar recommendations on inexpensive wines.

No, not intrinsically. One can drink it in a classy manner or do shots of it on the balcony and show their tits. Same as eating dinner. It's not classy or unclassy, it's how it's done. Personally I like the more obscure family wines. I like some Romanian wine some friends brought me from their last trip home. I've branched out into Turkish and have found I have quite the taste for amber wine and oakless whites, and I appreciate the smaller farms that are putting thier stuff up against the "mondavi's" of the world who don't even make all that good of wine but they have the marketting to make others ignore that.

I'd say many people wouldn't call it "classy" to sit in a dusty room with a table and 4 chairs by the fire with some really good bread and a local bottle and sit around with your friends and talk about the good ol days spent together doing other things. That's not an expensive night. That's not one that you need a personal assistant to get you an invite to, but it's some of the best evenings I've had in my life that didn't involve a gun in my hand, even if I haven't had a change of clothes in a day or two. In the U. S. that'd cost you $40 bucks? $60? If that. Plenty of places in the world you can do that for under $5, and I've enjoyed it just as much there.

I think it can be as classy as eating a sandwich or walking your dog. Class is more internal than external.

I think sitting by that fire in a dusty cafe, sharing a loaf and emptying a bottle is a classy way to spend an evening with friends. I don't think that BECAUSE of the wine.

If me, yeah I think class is in the individual more than the action, and I'd find that person just as classy with an inexpensive wine. Maybe more so if he picked a good bottle not just ordered the most expensive thing on the wine list.
