Do you think it’s strange that alcohol seems to be the standard party device for people?

I don’t even like alcohol that much unless it’s a cocktail. I would rather make friends over caesar salad or mashed potatoes. I have no idea why people say “go for drinks,” when inviting people for a recreational social activity. I think it would make more sense to say, “let’s go for mashed potatoes,” or “let’s go for fried rice.”

Not really- it helps people drop their inhibitions and let their hair down, so to speak. That's not to say that I'd be opposed to inviting someone out for mashed potatoes, but these days I think so many people are dieting that it'd actually be a harder sell.

Well you can have a sober party where everybody stands around glaring at each other in an awkward and suspicious manner. Or you can have an alcohol party where people mellow out, chat easily and that one guy takes it too far and vomits on your carpet after sexually assaulting every female in the room (and possibly some of the guys as well).
