An addiction to it is just as bad as a smoking addiction in my opinion. It literally destroys your frontal cortex.
Anonymous(25-29)+1 yI do none of that. None of it.
Not Even in celebrations or Holidays. I don’t care who says what. At 13 years old I used to drink with the older kids. That shit feels like a sleep aid. Feels like a sleep medicine. It immediately numbs your legs. Specially your thighs.
It feels like I did 50 squats. 😬 I don’t get how people like that! Nothing about it feels good. I did like the fizz, but you can always get fizz water so yeah.
Never again. I haven’t done anything since the age of 16. And it’s staying like that!
How the hell am I supposed to enjoy a celebration if I’m gonna feel drowsy and sleepy and tired? That never made sense to me. Ever.
All I’m gonna do is take a nap. I’m not even gonna dance or anything anymore.DA FUCKKK? 🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨

+1 yMany people use it to socialize or just cope in daily life.. So because it is legal and a staple for so many people it is hard to get rid of it or to deter people away from it..
I don't really get it tho because if someone smoked one joint everyday, people would say they are a drug addict but people who drink a glass of whine everyday are not considered alcoholics LOL
122 Reply- +1 y
I wouldn't say anyone that has one joint a day is a drug addict but I don't know what qualifies that technically. As for alcohol:
"Drinking alcohol in moderation generally is not a cause for concern. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, drinking is considered to be in the moderate or low-risk range for women at no more than three drinks in any one day and no more than seven drinks per week. For men, it is no more than four drinks a day and no more than 14 drinks per week."
newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/.../
Alcohol can be a serious issue for people. In moderation it's not unhealthy. I had very healthy family members live in their 90s and a few over a hundred and they all drank wine under the limits that I quoted above. They weren't alcoholics.
Also why is it normalized? It's simple. People have been driving alcohol for a very long time and it does give you a good feeling when you do. Tie that into that it's a huge global multi billion dollar industry that markets it to everyone... That makes it pretty normal.
Is alcohol good overall. There's a lot of conflicting stories. When people hear oh one or two a day might have health benefits... that also leads to normalizing it.
That said in small moderation it's not detrimental for most. Hence my 90+ year old relatives who safely drank maybe a drink a day. Many people are like them.
In large quantities it's terrible and deadly.

@Friendlybro79 Most people that don't do drugs would say they are a drug addict..
I don't like alcohol personally because my parents drank far too much and so did my grandparents..
But if you NEED to have some alcohol everyday I would say you are an alcoholic.. Even if it is in moderation, it is still a drug substance..
Asker+1 y@Friendlybro79 My dad is an alcohol addict and he protects it just like you do.
- +1 y
I definitely understand you not liking alcohol for all those reasons. Need and like to are an interesting conversation. If you like to have one drink a day that's not alcoholism. I do feel there's a fine line between the two but if you can keep it to one a day it's just not affecting you negatively at all. If you're an alcoholic you can't have just one.
Asker+1 y@Friendlybro79 in my opinion you're an alcoholic when you can't go a day without it.
- +1 y
@Friendlybro79 But the question then is why do you like to have that one a day? What does it do for you? It obviously does something or you wouldn't want it..
- +1 y
Why do you like to have a piece of cake a day? It's because you like it. Some people like how it pairs well with food. If you don't understand that yourself it's ok but it's not alcoholism if it's one a day and because you enjoy it. Addict is a strong word.
Asker+1 y@Friendlybro79 I've heard about buffalo wings with beer

Yeah there's a whole world of wine and food pairings that are fun to eat and drink together. If you can control your consumption it is fun and. It destructive. That said not everyone should drink. I get that and it all comes with risks of addiction. If it runs in the family it might be good to stay clear.

@davado88 a bottle of wine a day is an addiction. You don't have to consider it but medical experts would and tell you that's way too much. Some folks are functional alcoholics... so yes functional but still an alcoholic

i reread what i wote and it make perfect sense.
it is still possible for europeans to be actual alcoholics but it requires hard spirits and a lot of them over a long period.
99% of americans who think they are alcoholics are not.
Theyre looking for excuses for doing the dumb shit they did whilst drunk.
Which would make sense if you had the character of a 5 year old schoolgirl.
But for adults is extremely puerile
Asker+1 y@Friendlybro79 my dad is indeed a high functioning alcoholic
- +1 y
@davado88 Is it possible you're not a medical expert. If you drink 4 or 5 drinks a day you're an alcoholic. You can function fine but it's the definition of a functioning alcoholic. Also the recommended amount my any medical expert is 14 a week for a man no more than 3 in one day. You're talking 28-35 a week. That's a drinking problem based on medical advice. Your social norm isn't healthy then. Trust me coming from a country that is unhealthy diet wise I've done my homework. If you were to stop driving cold after that much driving constantly you'd go into withdrawal very likely. That doesn't happen if you're not dependent or... an alcoholic
- +1 y
@Friendlybro79 Red wine is good for your heart as well, but people on this thread are acting like the only choices are teetotaler or a fifth of vodka with every meal are the only two choices. Moderation, yes, just like carbs, protein, and fats, three essential components of life. Even water will kill you if consumed in extremes.

675 opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. I work at a bar. Half of my coworkers are alcoholics. I see all levels of alcoholism. I drink but I rarely get drunk. There's one girl who was in a bad car wreck resulting in brain damage who has no business drinking. I tried to get one of the guys who quit drinking and is close to her to try to convince her to give up drinking, but she's too stupid. Alcohol is one of the worst things for perks recovering from a traumatic brain injury. I've seen alcohol ruin a lot of people's lives because they can't handle their liquor. People getting drunk definitely has caused more fights, car crashes, murders, suicides, and accidental deaths than any other drug.

They will argue with you and think u are nuts. Because they are conditioned to believe it isn't that bad. It has nothing to do with logic... Because drinking alcohol is actually good for you if you drink in moderation , it’s only bad if you abuse alcohol by drinking consistently until you are completely bombed out and you allow it to control you. What most people don’t realize is most alcoholic beverages are actually better for you then most of the soft drinks on the market , like sodas and energy drinks , and fruit juices etc because most of those drinks are packed with artificial flavors and sugars or substitute sugars, caffeine etc. compared to beer and hard liquor that is actually made with natural ingredients made from the Earth , I am mainly a craft beer drinker , I usually l drink craft beer when it comes to drinking with friends etc. I will take a beer over a soda as much as possible because beer is actually better for you than soda is. There is a lot of health benefits for drinking beer and other alcohols that most people aren’t aware of.

Wrong. Research has shown there is no safe dosage for alcohol. It’s harmful from the first sip.
- +1 y
I’m sorry to hear your father is an alcoholic , I had an alcoholic father as well that took a toll on me and my brothers as well , So trust me I know what you mean by suffering. I still like to drink beer on occasion with friends , I pretty much know my limits for the most part and I don’t drink every day , Research also shows that beer is good for you as well,, but all in all it really doesn’t matter , because what on this earth is really good for us? We are all going to die if something , so just live your life the happiest you can be , I am happy when I drink beer so I am going to keep drinking it lol
Asker+1 yDo what makes you happy.
- +1 y
Exactly , I had friends that were health nuts , that watched what they ate , said No to a lot of things , exercised daily , and they still dropped dead at a young age , so I no longer listen to health advice , people dropped dead from eating lettuce , so just live your life the best you can , I don’t give 2 shits what other people think or say when it comes to what I enjoy
Asker+1 yI disagree with watching what you eat and exercising daily in general. Diet just has to be balanced. And you have to rest. But then again I'm a hard gainer so maybe I just don't get how people that gain weight fast feel.
- +1 y
I was never much of a diet freak myself, I mainly just eat whatever looks good to me , I just choose not to over indulge and stuff myself , but on occasion I will, not going to lie , if I feel I packed on to many pounds then I will cut my portions and exercise more , I know most people that exercise want to lose weight and feel better about themselves , and that’s all fine and dandy , but most people that do that are scared to eat , and limit themselves thinking oh no if I eat that I am going to gain 10 pounds , and sadly that isn t the case at all , just don’t over eat , that’s what has helped me shed some of those unwanted pounds
Asker+1 yI over eat and do fitness. I was always skinny tho I remember me wanting to gain weight really badly

Legal way to blow off steam if drugs & alcohol is your thing. But health studies are coming out saying that the “glass of wine a night” people thought was healthy isn’t, and that in fact no amount of alcohol is actually healthy. Might see a shift in how alcohol is treated but govt makes too much off of it to ban it.

+1 yAlcohol is the only legalized drug in this country. Most people don’t call it a drug. But if you compare it to what we consider drugs, it’s far worse. It makes you impaired to making good decisions the more you consume, it causes bodily, harm physically, mentally, emotionally. It literally corrodes your liver. The list of comparabilities is endless. But yet, we still are ok with it killing millions every year, and people getting hurt in multiple of ways by it.

I agree 100% I hate how normalized it is. I've seen what alcohol does to people first hand and that experience in my life made me dislike it greatly. It's made me decide I never want to drink in my life. It's just a waste of time in my opinion, and can lead to so many bad things. Alcoholism (or alcohol-related offenses) has been seen for centuries as some sort of peccadillo. The boys-will-be-boys argument, etc. Until the 1970s police would often just take your car keys and call you a taxi.
The mindset has changed of course, but it took a long time. - +1 y
Exactly, we Europeans love our alcohol ❤️
+1 yRemember prohibition? How they tried to treat it like a drug and failed? Yeah, that’s why it’s “normalized”.
The reality is too many people, specifically white people, enjoy it casually to let it go and the government at the time didn’t want to needlessly arrest more white people than black people or anyone who couldn’t be considered legally white at the time. They’re not going to try again after the massive failure that was the entirety of prohibition.00 Reply- 466 opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic.
+1 yArguably an alcohol addiction is actually worse than a smoking addiction
Why we normalise it... Because it's fun and a social activity often. It's been around for pretty much ever. When it was banned it made drinking problems worse and crime worse.
+1 yHumans have been consuming alcohol since there have been humans. The main reason that humans decided to settle down and cultivate crops was to grow grain for beer. For most of human history, alcoholic drinks were safer than water. Beer, in particular, when made naturally has tons of vitamins.
We are social animals, and alcohol encourages social behavior.
Asker+1 yUhm this is protecting alcohol. Drugs has been consumed by humans since the start too. Most drugs are literally derived from plants and some are even plants. Makes no sense to me.
- +1 y
I’m accurately portraying history. Reality doesn’t care if you approve of it or not.
Asker+1 yBut that wasn't answering my question was it?
- +1 y
I answered 100%. It's normalized because it correlates with the creation of human societies, and has - at times - been life-saving.
Asker+1 yNot a lot of people know the history of beer. Why are we allowed to drink at 16? Even now with studies showing it's bad. I want to know why it's normalised in this day and age
- +1 y
You are literally asking the same question over and over and I'm giving you the answer over and over. Alcohol and human culture are completely intertwined. Your ancestors would never have stopped to farm were it not for grain for beer. You'd still be a nomad roaming the country for food. We aren't different things from those ancient people. They are us. Their culture is passed down to us.
Asker+1 yBut they also did drugs. Drugs isn't that normalised I'd say.
- +1 y
Drugs *aren't* normalized, at least in the US, because the alcohol producers and paper producers lobbied against them.
I see in your other comments that you're really just harping on alcohol because your dad is an alcoholic. I'm really sorry that you're dealing with this, but to argue and attack people for stating facts about alcohol because of your personal experience isn't really worthwhile.
Asker+1 yBut it's bad in general tho I ain't making that shit up
- +1 y
It's bad if you want to cherry-pick and amplify the negatives and ignore the positives. You could do that with virtually anything. Very few things are 100% bad or 100% good. Hell, you can die from drinking too much water.
Asker+1 yThat's true but alcohol is one of the most dangerous drugs at this moment 'cause lots of people die because of it.
- +1 y
It's one of the most dangerous drugs, because it's the most accessible. If all drugs were legal and you could buy heroin from the grocery store you'd see similar rates of abuse and harm.
Asker+1 yThat's why I don't understand why it's more normalised than smoking. In my country there are warnings on the cigarette packs, they don't do that to alcohol bottles/cans
- +1 y
I explained why it's more normalized several times. You just don't want to understand it.
Asker+1 yI've read it, I just don't get why people are that easy minded

we have been drinking alcohol for longer than we’ve been humans, and once we realized that the barley and wheat that we were growing can make beer, it became set in our social psyche. It also allowed for the boiling of water that killed off pathogens that were harmful to us, unfortunately, like other things that make us feel good they can be damaging if done in excess.
