Americans, is it true that you drink wine from any type of glass?

I hate drinking wine from a cheep plastic or paper cup. Those spoil the taste.
Some plastic wine glasses are okay. My wife and I have some nice ones for camping and certain events where we want to avoid accidental breakage. It's unwise to use glass at pool parties, for example.
But I much prefer glass. You get the pure flavor and bouquet of wine when sipping from glass or crystal.
i drink ANY liquid on ANY cup, unless we are having some formal dinner then it's specified just for aesthetics.
i do find that some drinks taste BETTER depending on the cup i use.
I have this orange mug that i feel water and oatmeal taste best in, i enjoy and savor every sip just becuse it feels more delicious in this specific cup. However if i can't find it or someone is using it i just use whatever else i can find.
usually people have a winery and there you have your specific glasses for that certain drink, which then you will automatically be drinking from the proper glass, drinking from the indicated proper glass can affect the taste and experience so most would rather have it in the proper glass.
I've seen Americans do this and it puzzles me. Wine glasses are made for wine. You hold the stem of the glass so as not to influence warmth from your palm onto the wine. Also wine glasses are not made equally. Some are wide, some are narrow. Depends on what you're drinking. Wine glasses are also typically thinner to enhance the tasting aspect. When I drink wine, I drink it to enjoy the whole experience. But Americans have this anything-goes mentality, and if they like doing something, they think 'who cares'? I just let them be now, because I find giving unsolicited education about how and why things are done a certain way are lost on them with the "Well this is how we do things in Murica" type of attitude. So be it.
@rigmarole "You sound retarded." Careful now. Your lack of knowledge is showing, hence why your insult is sadly placed back on you. Wine cellars, my friend. Wine should not be stored where it can be warmed so it doesn't oxidate. This is why there are wine cellars in basements which are typically cooler, and why people who have some knowledge of wine know to store their wine where it can be kept at their ideal temperature year round.
@Kingofkings1992 "I've lived in America my whole life" ... Of course. Say no more. :)
@rigmarole Whatever you say.
It's not because "well this is how we do things in Murica" , it's because most people drink cheap wine if they are trying to get drunk. Most Americans aren't pretentious enough to care about drinking cheap wine out of wine glasses. Anybody over here who drinks expensive wine drinks it out of a wine glass just like all the other snobs who drink expensive wine.
@rigmarole The average room is kept at 20 or 24 degrees Celsius. Unless you suffer some severe circulation or heart issues your hand should be in and around normal body temperature at 37 degrees Celsius. At a minimum that means there's 13 degrees (37 - 24 = 13) Celsius of difference in temperature and thus is you are holding a plastic glass with wine in it, you're warming up the wine unnecessarily which makes for a bad taste.
In comparable since you don't know the average wine cellar is kept at 11 to 15 degrees Celsius. So if you are holding a plastic or paper cup full of wine with your roughly 37 degree Celsius hand that means you're holding onto wine & warming it up at twice the RECOMMENDED temperature.
And no my darling friend you sound retarded & ignorant, quite typical of Americans. And why other countries sort of laugh at you.
@Ozanne - Americans do a lot of things that puzzle Europeans and even Canadians, comically, for that matter.
I think it's a lack of general education & knowledge. I mean if you google it statistically a large % of Americans can't even name their own state capital city.
And then poor upbringing. Most of my American friends come from middle class / upper class. They use wine glasses.
Whereas when I lived in a run down area of New York once for a few months - work related - it wasn't uncommon to see some Americans swigging wine from a bottle like it was a cheap plonk.
*was a cheap beer
@Staximus "Most Americans aren't pretentious enough to care about drinking cheap wine out of wine glasses."
ROFL. Using a wine glass has nothing to do with being pretentious. Wine glasses are designed to maintain the right temperature. That is WHY they were designed to have LONG stems. If that wasn't the case why wouldn't wine glasses be made like beer glasses. USE YOUR BRAIN.
It's such BASIC knowledge that wine has to be at X temperature for a proper taste - hence again the LONG stems of wine glasses - even teens in Europe can tell you why within 60 seconds of thought.
@rigmarole You MUST be from the US otherwise you would know better...
@Staximus This isn't about being snobby. It's about using the things intended for its use. I once knew an American who ate ice cream out of a glass. Not a dessert bowl, not even a cereal bowl. A glass. He reasoned that it was easier to "drink down" any leftover ice cream. I mean, it's interesting to understand the why's of it, but it's still odd. A glass to everyone else is for drinking water, pop or juice. Sticking a spoon in there risks chipping, since bowls are made from thicker glass or china, meant for spoons to dig into. This is why I go back to what wine glasses are for. A wine glass is for wine. A beer mug or beer glass for beer, etc. No different than a spoon is for soup, a butter knife for butter, etc. Plus hundreds of examples of things left in the kitchen and all those things out of the kitchen.
@Siochfhradha He doesn't understand wine. Simple. He obviously thought you just bring it home, stand it upright on the kitchen counter, exposed to light and room temperature for months until opening it at Christmas. His initial response of "you sound retarded" was laughable as all the while he thought he was on to something, but instead just showed his own ignorance. :D
@Ozanne - yeah unfortunately there's a lot of the more ignorant Americans on this forum - well many forums - than ones who have above general education I've found. Some of the posts, not just here, would make you wonder if the person graduated schooling. ... I mean I come from an old Irish (from County Claire) family, not wealthy or "pretentious" by any stretch, but even we're not so backwards or barbaric as to not know why wine glasses were invented.
@Siochfhradha you're a bourgeois imbecile who obviously didn't read my whole comment. Let's try this again for slow people like yourself. Any American who spends money on good wine drinks it from a wine glass. There's no point in bothering with a wine glass if your drinking a $5 bottle of wine. Don't try to act like you're some kind of professional sommelier, you probably drink two buck Chuck most of the time.
@Staximus ROFL. The pathetic thing of your uneducated ignorant and moronic stupidity is wine glasses are NOT expensive by any strength of the imagination. You can buy them at any dollar store for a $1.25. So the ONLY one who is SLOOOOWWW is you. And so LOW CLASS I'd not be surprised if your mother is your father's cousin.
*stretch
@Ozanne - the pleasure of being uneducated & ignorant means that a person is oftentimes too stupid to understand that they are ignorant and that their conduct is wrong. It's like trying to teach a dog that peeing in the house is wrong when the dog's too dumb to realize outside is better itself.
@Staximus "There's no point in bothering with a wine glass if your drinking a $5 bottle of wine." You continue to show your ignorance about the subject and don't know when to shut up about it.
Here, I'll help you learn something. There are some wines out there that can be inexpensive that can actually be of better quality than an seemingly expensive bottle of wine. If you take an old winery from France that has been in business for centuries, family owned, experienced grape growers, experienced business people, with no overhead, you will usually have a consistently good wine from them each year (granted that there are no weather devastations in the area). However, a brand spanking new winery in California that has to make enough money to pay back the banks and other lenders for the land and the equipment will need to hike up the prices on what might be a mediocre wine with no where near as much experience as the little winery in France pumping out better wine. But don't worry. There are a lot of people like you who don't know anything about wine, and just assume expensive means better. You don't know what you're talking about and it shows with each comment. And the insults? LOL Please. It doesn't make your point any more stupid than it already is when you're talking to two people here who understand the basics of wine when you have no knowledge at all. I'm so glad comments can't be deleted so that people can read all that you've had to say so far that's been blatantly incorrect and not just a little rude. :)
@Staximus ROFL. But you just admitted you do, you goof. You have repeatedly referred to the use of wine glasses as pretentious - showing your uneducated ignorance - and said Americans buying $5 wine won't use wine glasses. So quite obviously $5 wine is ALL you can afford. ... On the occasion I DO drink wine I'll usually buy bottles that range from $75 to 125.
by the way imbecile if you want to try and insult someone do try and get the country right. Ozanne is French I said I am Irish as EXTREMELY OBVIOUS by my name. Marie Antoinette as you obviously failed high school is FRENCH.
@Staximus by the way as Ozanne accurately says you uneducated ignorant American it is VERY easy to get an very good wine at a low price. In fact most decent wines ARE cheaply priced because logics - cheaper price = sell more === more all around profit. Even a 10 year old child selling lemonade can comprehend something so simple that you struggle so so very hard to understand.
So yes it makes sense to have wine glasses for a cheap bottle so that you can enjoy a decent wine properly. But you're probably like many low class Americans and a drunkard.
Also right out of the bottle or box.
It's wine, just a very socially acceptable from of getting blitzed.
Do the same thing with bourbon and you're an alcoholic, but with wine you just had 1 glass too many.
@Fireguy17 haha I like the way you think!

I'm from the South, we drink tea from a mason jar.

The special glasses are only for New Year's Eve.
I like being weird, plus don't give a scheiße.
I thought Americans drunk it out of a paper cup with a straw.
straws hurt my eyes (j/k)
What is this "glass" you speak of?

Haha but yes, I have drank wine from paper cup, styrofoam, from bottle, Collins glass, rocks glass, a mason jar, pretty much anything that will hold liquid.
What country are you in that if it's not from a wine glass, the people won't drink it?
I have to come back after reading some of the responses (and the very heated reply threads) and say I do think it's a bit funny, all the controversy.
I have been a bartender, worked hand in hand with sommeliers (including taking their advice and wisdom for my own understanding), taken courses in wine tasting, been a member of wineries, done a lot of wine tasting, and some households in my family are very keen on their wine, buying somewhere around 5-10 cases a year, with no restrictions on price, only caring about quality.
Of course glassware makes a difference in the quality of the experience. The same is true for pretty much any beverage, from water to whiskey. Which is why you can find such a wide variety of glassware for various beverages, and yes, as a bartender, I consider what will be best for what I am serving.
Yet I am still not above a styrofoam cup, or even straight out of the bottle, if that's the occasion. I have a distinct fond memory of a bonfire and bottling with a group of friends, one of whom is a winemaker, and took a swing directly from the bottle. It's more a sign of uncouth, uncivilized, and ignorant people when they treat others as though they are worth less or to be looked down upon based on their choice (or lack of choice) of glassware. That's just ridiculous, and unkind.
Cheers to you all, and bottoms up! :)
I've honestly never seen this, so I'm gonna say NO
Lol. I would not be surprised though😂
Kind of, but most ladies I know use actual wine glasses.
Depends on where I am and what wine it is. Something nice, yes of course I would want to use a proper glass to allow breathing. But some cheap boxed shit? Red solo cup... I fill you up... proceed to party
I/We would if the appropriate wine glasses aren't available.
Otherwise, I'd typically drink wine with a wine glass when served in a restaurant or our home/establishments.
I don't usually drink wine (or alcohol for the matter) but when I have I've always drank from wine glasses as well as everyone i know. Champagne is also drank from a wine glass. Never saw anyone drink it out of a plastic cup?
It depends on where we are. At a picnic, for example, a crystal wine glass is likely to be broken, so a plastic cup is typically used. In a dinner environment, a wine glass normally holds the wine.
I have been guilty of drinking a Sangiovese from a Bordeaux glass from time to time when I don't want to go retrieve the correct one, but never with company.
If a man is drinking wine, he likely going to be very particular in what type of glasses he uses. Women on the other hand are more likely to use whatever is available and not be the pretentious wine expert that the man will more likely portray
Yes it is true. Most, not all, Americans have very little etiquette and little understanding about wine, or other culinary specialties for that matter.
A friend told me from summer gatherings with the American forces, where they handed out red wine in plastic cups with ice cubes in it. :-( :-(
I'll drink wine out of any glass without a stem... Stemless wine glasses work, but so do a rocks glass or water glass...
😂 You’re French, right? Yes, but have to admit the glass does make a difference, especially if you’re an enthusiast.
If you drink it fast enough it doesn’t matter what shape glass. Lately I’ve been using a half liter jar.
The idea is to get drunk , so anything works lol
(Kidding)
I’d like to say American’s can be very versatile! If we want it, we find a way to have it.
Not that I know of but after reading some of these comments…seems like some do. SMH.
Yes I have family in America they are savages. 😂
depends on the day. Some days are drink straight from the bottle/bag days.
I rarely drink but when I do I'm not picky about what type of glass to use
To all you bourgeois Eurotrash bashing Americans in the comments like you're some kind of sommelier - You would have grown up speaking German and saluting the Nazi flag of it wasn't for us.
Not a wine drinker myself, but yeah people will drink it from anything. Of course in formal settings it's usually from an "appropriate" glass.
No Wine is not as popular as it is in France but I would imagine the people who do drink it, do it properly.
But some may do this.
@julie4. When I used to drink I wound drink out of the bottle, if "necessary".
Not for me. I use wine glasses.
I also don't personally know anyone that drinks it out if anything other than wine glasses.
I've never seen anyone over here do that.
I drink wine from a wine glass. I found a 47 Margot online. Guy want 2 g's for it. Hell no. I don't even know if its a real one.
Wine is wine. Cup, mug, bottle, glass. All works the same.
I'm not a wine drinker so that counts me out. If I was a wine drinker I would use proper wine glasses.
I’ve never seen that. Especially in restaurants etc. Wine glasses are widely used, in fact more likely as we Americans think them fancy.
Yeah, the words “American” and “class” don't belong in the same sentence.
Don't lump us all in one boat. We do have edicate.
and cups and mugs, But, if your in to wine you don't!
I don’t drink but yeah I see it all the time
If we absolutely have to - yes. I personally don't drink alcohol.
Goblet or a Small And All. xxoo
We improvised, adapt, and overcome.
Yes, or right out of the bottle.
You can it it’s classy to use wine glasses
That just sounds wrong.
Hell, sometimes we don’t even use a glass
we're so uncivilized huh?
Nope, just the bottle itself. 🙃
only paper cups for me
wine is meh, more of a scotch guy
I have absolutely
I do it and I am European
I will in a pinch.
No...
I choose a glass
not into that
