I don't think this type of phenomena has caught on yet here in Japan, thankfully. It seems to be a Western phenomena.
I would thank the Buddha I was you!
It's a cancer that seeks to self destruct the society it infects.
It seems rooted in Marxist class conflict theory to me, but replacing the notion of social class with identity. The metaphorical "bourgeoise" becomes the "straight white male" in their eyes and everyone else is the "proletariat", and "capitalism" is replaced by "patriarchy". At least that's my admittedly knee-jerk impression of it, and I think it leads to a very unhealthy mindset where all sorts of people view themselves as perpetual victims.
Mostly I think it tears away at a sense of individual responsibility in favor of "social responsibility". Like instead of seeing it as an individual's responsibility to be thick-skinned enough to use the internet, engage in comedy shows, etc, they focus on the "social responsibility" of trying to censor anything that anyone can find offensive, and I think that eventually works its way to censoring just about everything since just about everything is bound to offend someone, somewhere.
Good observations!
@_piotr Cheers! At least it seems uncannily similar to Marxism to me, and I often think "woke" is referring to class consciousness of the sort that was hypothetically supposed to give rise to the proletariat revolution.
I think that is an excellent analysis. It's a "we" versus "them" attempt to demonize white men and convince everyone else they are victims of the white man's evil capitalist obsession. The purpose is to divide and conquer so they can weaken Western society and replace capitalism and liberty with authoritarian communism. It is a destroyer of freedom on every level. And the woke are the brainwashed zombies a. k. a. the ranks and file useful idiots who help the agenda succeed.
It's bizarrely racist to me. Like beyond the blatant racism towards white people, DEI hiring practices based on race seem to operate on the notion that all white people are the same, all Asians are the same, all black people are the same, all Hispanics are the same, etc. It's such a bizarre and hypocritical ideology to me. Something that gives me hope though is that it seems like a growing number of people are waking up and realizing that being "woke" is antithetical to actually being aware of what's truly going.
I hope you are right but I have my doubts. Part of the ideology is to intimidate people into going along with the Marxist agenda by increasingly thuggish means including now, in America and Canada at least and I am sure other Western countries, flat out unabashed political persecution by the government.
Ouch! One of my biggest concerns is academic corruption like this:
