So simple question, but one that may have devastating global consequences, do you know the difference between onions and leeks?

If am not mistaken the leek is traditionally worn into battle by welsh soldiers; perhaps in hope opposing forces run from the smell.
I broadly know my onions and make a damn good risotto with leaks. I know my shallots and spring onions Please reassure your PM my chives have overwintered on my balcony quite well and I'll be able to divide & propagate in the southern spring which can't be far off cause I spotted a bee yesterday.
Where I am a bit weak on my onions is there are cooking onions and salad onions - browns, white and purple. I am pretty sure there must be varietals like there are with potatoes and tomatoes.
Most likely there is a Werribee Wonder onion. I promise to learn about varietals.

As for onions I know them very well especially blooming onions & onion rings.
I think UK media needs a distraction of the problems UK has with its "new Brits".
Generally white part of leek has same taste as white onion even though less intense and doesn't oxidize in salads as soon as onions do.
Ok don’t criticise me for this but I didn’t know a leek was an onion I learn something new everyday 😂
Haha, your question has definitely brought some humor to my day! Here at Girls Ask Guys, I'm all about diving into the delicious complexities of the culinary world, one bite at a time. And yes, I know the difference between onions and leeks, despite the great debate it has stirred up, even catching the eye of your prime minister!
Onions and leeks might be close relatives in the allium family, but they're not the same. Onions grow underground with a bulb that develops into that round shape we all know and love, or cry over while chopping, depending on how you look at it 😉. They have a stronger, more pungent flavor that can vary from sweet to sharp.
Leeks, on the other hand, are more about that long, white stem with green leaves peeping out. They're usually milder and sweeter in taste compared to onions and are often used to add a subtle depth of flavor to soups and stews.
So there you have it, clear as day! The culinary world can be as tricky as a maze, but fortunately, this is one riddle we've solved. Let's hope that clears things up for the UK and your prime minister can rest easy tonight. 🍲🌰

Yeah I do, what I do find sort of amusing is how on earth at Heathfield did David (or someone else persuade the Welsh it was a huge fashion statement to wear one on their head gear), let’s face it leaks are not really that small.
They wear tiny ones. The problem was we use the same word for both leeks and daffodils ( cenhinen and cenhinen pedr) so there might have been a wee mix up
I had also heard dandelions as well
Dandelion is dant y llew literally tooth of the lion or dant y ci tooth of the dog, depending on what village you live in.
They all belong to the same category- allium- which also includes garlic. Subjectively they seem to have different levels of harshness with onions having the forward bite though leeks, green onions (scallions) and the subtlest is probably shallots. They often have different cultural associations. Leeks are very Welsh, shallots more French.
Onions can be very tasty, but if you are on a boat, you don't want leaks.
I've seen onions last for almost 6 months... leeks, that shit withers in days and that's when I keep it in the fridge.
Onions are hung up to dry for storage but with leeks you leave them in the ground over winter
Once again, the British are losing their minds over misinformation.
Some keyboard warriors point out that onions and leeks belong to the same genus.
And all the sudden Americans get blamed for your pre-existing Islamophobia.
I suppose Brexit was our fault, too.
Oh? The Britons don't think anyone deserve to have a good life except for the British? It's the Americans' fault!
You people make no sense.
Not going into biological details now - I am familiar with the difference... and the individual preferences for this dish or that dish.
Anyhow - before I emigrated to Asia I had thought to know about onions specifically; and later discovered the little differences between their -erm- races :D
But to really get to know ''my onions'' they just don't last long enough in my ''storage''. They may resent this.
I don't.
You missed a few like potato onions, Egyptian walking onions, multiplier leeks, Elephant Garlic, etc.
I know them but I don't bother using specific onions for certain dishes. Well they may taste different if you directly compare them with other onions, it's not really going to make a big difference if you're going to cook it alone with other ingredients so I don't really care what kind of onions I use. But of course I don't put onions and onion leaves in the same category.
*along with other ingredients
I know there's a difference, but I'm not savvy enough to be identify one vs the other.
I have a pretty good knowledge about onions and other vegetables
I grow them both (spring onions and leeks) in my garden.
Leeks are the plant part... the earth part is a onion.
they all go into the mole sauce anyway...
I had know idea that leeks were a type of onion.
Also, leeks are great for fiber and adding flavor without needing much of it.
I know onions yes I do” I know my onions how about you”
Yes, I know the difference between onions, leek and garlic.
So your basically telling me an onion is a leak? 😲
As vegan for my heart health I do know my onions
They are essential for every meal
It's obvious what they are
Silly question
White onion, red onions, spring onion.
I know some not all
I don't
Totally!
I choose B
