Coffee's a hot common bev -- traditionally cheaper than a soda and readily available to the working class.

Going way back to ancient times, many communities consumed coffee or highly caffeinated tea in various forms (1) to stay warm/sharp/awake, (2) for medicinal purposes, or (3) as part of a social norm.

For example:

• Canteens and food trucks offering coffee were readily available at most work sites of both "white collar" and "blue collar" jobs...
• Instant coffee was ultimately popularized during wartime for the benefit of soldiers...
• From the 1940s and onward it was even consumed specifically to stave off asthma.

It is thought to have originated in Ethiopia, made its way to Yemen in the 15th century, and to Persia, Egypt, Syria, and Turkey in the 16th century.

coffee has a "cultural" presence because coffee shops are common social spaces/relaxation. many people (not just white people) rely on coffee to start their day. you can custom coffee literally any way you want. and honestly, people are just tired
