I have chickens, pigs, and others animals around and they enjoy the fresh items we discard.

Chickens... love chicken and vegetables.. they should not eat bread. Pigs love all kinds of foods... fruits, vegetables. Just don't give them avocados.

If you have table scraps, look to see if there are farmers nearby. Sometimes a dog shelter will take meats and bones for their dogs. It's good for them.

No sense wasting food when there are others hungry.

Know what the animals eat, so they stay healthy.

It's illegal in the UK because of the risk of TSE's being transmitted to farm animals. Once food enters any human kitchen it can't be fed to farm animals.

nah, we rarely have any leftovers... and if we do, they serve as a dinner or the next day breakfast :D

I rarely yield leftover food and when i do it is half a portion or less and spoils faster than i can find someone to give it to

I should have mentioned that these weren't my leftovers. I worked in a sandwich factory. We supplied all the convenience stores. But it wasn't just sandwiches it was anything you can think of you would see at a convenience store. I put all of the expired stuff in a box in the freezer. When the box was full one of the workers took it home to feed his pigs. Did you know that pigs don't care if pecan pie is expired?

haha, that's awsome story. I had no idea they would eat all that. I've seen them eat rotting apple, so not surprised. They were really happy when I gave them pinapple. Never tasted, had to think about it... then they turned into wild animals with wagging tails:-)
i bet you have stories to tell about making sandwiches. you are the first I've talked to whom had that job.
I'm glad to hear the food was going somewhere to use and not thrown out, that's my intent. That we don't give it to humans is a legal/cost thing and sad. I've seen many starving... and people go to dumpsters to get food. that's another topic.

I never actually made sandwiches there, but I think it would have been fun. I started in the freezer driving a forklift. When they found out I could drive a truck, they let me go on the road. That's how I had access to all the expired food. The sales people couldn't just say something expired and throw it away. So they had to give it all to me and I counted it and gave them credit. Then rather than throw it in the dumpster, I boxed it up and saved it in the freezer until Friday. By the time Friday rolled along, I must have had 200 to 300 lbs of expired food.

So the pig guy would stop by and we would load his van. The next day him and his boys fed the Hogs. The kids loved it and so did the Hogs. Pies, brownies, crackers, sandwiches, burritos, piroshkis, and many other things.

wow, that's awsome, some very happy pigs because of your consideration. Most people wouldn't take the time. I had no idea it was that much though... wow. The waste nation wide must be staggering out of grocery stores. no reason for anyone to be hungry.
kinda surprised management was ok with that... maybe they didn't know. Most companies when they have issues like this... we'll, you know beaurocracies! It's all about the dollar and lawsuits. Glad you put the food to good use!
Most kids would love htis and it be good to "get back to the farm" for them, with chores and such.
