Do you think toppings belong on pizza? Why or why not?

When I was growing up, my mom made plain, midwestern food. I never heard of ethnic food.
Every once in a while, she would make what she called pizza. She spread some kind of dough on an oiled pan with her fingers. It was really thin. Then she would spread some kind of sauce thinly on top. I don't know if it was pizza sauce from a can or jar or if it was plain tomato paste.
That was it.
When it was done, my dad would shake that powdered Parmesan cheese stuff on his.
Sometimes she would add slices of canned, hot house mushrooms to his pizza before she baked it.
It wasn't until my teens that I discovered ethnic food like Italian, Mexican and Chinese.
I soon discovered real pizza with good crust, tasty sauce, Mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, etc. And I eventually tried all kinds of toppings.
When I think about my mom's pizza, I wonder how people eat pizza without wonderful toppings. Pizza is a pie. You can be creative and top it with anything - different sauces, various meats, vegetables and, yes, even pineapple. There are so many ways to make a pizza pie a satisfying, gastronomical delight.
i mean pizza is originally a poor mans dish where you got the dough and you throw stuff on it that you happen to have. so you can't make the argument "this and that doesn't belong on pizza". there's nothing that doesn't belong on there.
Pizza is just bread, cheese and anything you'd like to add to bread and cheese... I don't know why folks are so into arguing about what does or doesn't belong on a pizza.
I prefer veggies on mine, but the one I'm seeing everywhere now is the pizza with pasta on it. Double Carbs? I'll pass, but to each their own.
Of course. Toppings add more flavor. But it depends on which toppings they are. Pineapple and fruit in general on a pizza is like a blasphemy lol
Toppings absolutely belong on pizza, as they add personality and depth to each slice. Each topping brings its unique flavors and textures, creating a symphony on the palate. During a trip to Naples, I realized that even simple ingredients like basil, tomatoes, and mozzarella can be magical. 🍕 Whether it’s traditional or inventive, toppings enhance the overall experience and tell a delicious story.

I ordered a sausage pizza the other day and it turned our to be chopped up hotdogs. I was so disappointed.
Yeah. Otherwise, then it's just a cheese pizza or some bread with pizza sauce.
I think eating plain cheese pizza is pre-crime, FBI-watchlist type of behavior. Only true psychos do this
Just to blow some minds…. if you venture down (or up, or over to, depending on your location) to New Haven, Connecticut (USA), they have their own style of pizza (only one that rivals NYC, in my opinion) that’s cooked in a coal oven, most notably, but also, they technically aren’t pizzas but “tomato pies.” And you have to order mozzarella cheese, otherwise it’s just the sauce. I don’t know who the hell is ordering them that way, but I want them thoroughly investigated by the authorities! So if you’re in New Haven, remember to order your tomato pie WITH CHEESE, and whatever other toppings you like.
@7Phoenix7 lmaoooooo…. this is why they say “don’t ask how the sausage is made”😂
Seems to me they would be pretty bland without some of the toppings. I know I am not fond of a plain cheese pizza
Sure , why not. ? Pizza goes good with poop topping
So you just want flat bread?
Only the dough itself isn't a topping.
My favorite is pepperoni and extra cheese.
Without toppings, pizza is just a toasted cheese open-face sandwich.
Gotta have toppings... for added flavor and increased health benefits.
Yeah, it adds different flavors to the pizza.
Yeah otherwise it's just bread.
It's a meal in a single item as far as I am concerned. All the flavours in the world could be part of a pizza surprise
on my pizza, yes they do...
chorizo, pepperoni and bacon bits...
Of course it does, otherwise it won't taste because it's just dough without anything.
Is there any reason to believe toppings as a concept don’t belong on pizza?
bacon, ham, peperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onion, extra cheese.
At least cheese. Anybody who eats a pizza with just sauce and crust is surely a fucking psychopath
meats, cheeses, sauce, and crust, anything else is going to be awful.
It depends. Pepperoni or sausage is ok. But more toppings make it heavy. Sometimes I think plain is the best. My favorite is pepperoni with hot honey.
I once had a seafood pizza with a white sauce that was divine…. The pizza is just the holder for all that you want to add to it…..
Sure toppings go on pizza. Otherwise it's just boring cheese pizza
yes barbecue and of course, pepperoni every time and once in a while, pineapples
Yes, otherwise it would just be dough, sauce, and cheese.
@Dat-Alpha-Lion yes pizza needs topping to make it different pizza.
Some toppings.. I like a cheese pizza, a pepporoni pizza, and the most I'd go is ham and green peppers.
Pineapples belong on pizza.
Anything our hearts desire.
Yes, otherwise it's just a saucy round bread
Yes, definitely. Plain cheese pizza is weird.
So just cooked dough?
Extra cheese, bacon and sliced salami
It wouldn't be a pizza if there were no toppings
Well, I like vegetarian toppings.
No. Pizza itself is good enough already
Depends
