I don’t really drink soda anymore. Back when I did, it was mostly a negligible variation between Coke and Pepsi to me, I was never fussy about that. Couldn’t tell one from the other in a blind taste test, probably. Or if I could, the conclusion would be “…but they’re both fine.”

I’m trying to remember if I ever had RC Cola. I wouldn’t really see it around much, not in convenience store coolers or anything. I remember it kind of being a punchline about anything off-brand, “That’s like the RC Cola of…” X, Y, or Z. If I ever bought it, it was ironic. I feel like I maybe had one out of a cooler at some kind of gathering, a BBQ or something. No recollection though.

The only stuff I really didn’t like were store brand sodas. We have a convenience store chain around here called Cumberland Farms, and they used to sell this off-brand soda called “Newport.” If you lived in the trenches, you knew all about those $0.99 3-liter bottles back in the 90s. They had cola, and then most of your usual sodas, plus fruit sodas, orange, grape, fruit punch, I think pineapple. The thing with them though, was that they were poorly constituted. SUPER sticky and more syrupy than you’d want…. god help you if you spilled it, that’s gonna be ants on ants on ants on ants once it dries, lmao. I just remember a lot of sticky counters and kitchen tables in lower-income households I frequented growing-up😝 It never got that real for us, thankfully😂
