I was visiting another town today and came across a "pay as you feel" restaurant. I didn't go in but I did check out the food on their website and there was a "suggested" price. I got the feeling that it catered for the older customer rather than bums. The food was heavily vegetable based like in the photo but didn't look too bad and you'd pay a lot more for the same dish elsewhere.
It got me thinking, are too many restaurants overpriced?
Now I appreciate restaurants have overheads and have to make a profit. BUT I do feel a lot of them take the piss with their pricing. On local menus I've seen fish at over £30, burgers not far off £20, you can be looking at £40 for beef or lamb in some places. Even places that do local traditional dishes, which tend to be for want of a better term "peasant food" will charge silly prices like £15 for a bowl of soup or cheese on toast.
Gdańsk is a tourist city and I there are 50 restaurants alone in old town. Under the week with a group reservation prices aren't that high. Approx 15-20 USD for three dish menu but while tourist season it's starts to be expensive. Same menu will cost 50-80 USD.
Those animals don't that end up victims on your plates don't think the price is too much, they paid with their lives and for what? People complaining that it's too expensive?
Plants at least don't have thoughts and fears.
As for are restaurants overpriced, depends on the cost of living and if the owner is not working in the venue then yes they are taking the piss. A restaurant should be like an owners house you're invited to eat in taht you pay for the pleasure nit just the food, that's better home made.

Even the nearest primates who are known to consumer each other (cannibalism in other words) have bigger canines than incisors but not naked apes. That's some pretty lame logic there. I see you're no student of history. As @purplepoppy points out humans evolved as pack hunters and tool users. We've been hunting and eating everything on the planet up to and including whales for several weeks now.
As for "pathetic hunting" LOL, our brains and tools have evolved to the point we no longer need to head out into the forest and risk our lives in some macho test of skill and strength to bring home a kill. Our killing has evolved to a cold precision where there is no question about the outcome of humans vs an 1,800 lb cow, a 2,000 lb bison, or a 1,000 lb hog. It's not about honor and courage. It's about feeding a population. If that's not an apex predator... well it is an apex predator... you're just talking out your ass again.
Humans do have one big advantage over big animals, we can run non stop for huge distances. Any prey item will always try and keep X distance from you. If you keep chasing they collapse in exhaustion and are easily killed with a spear.
Tell that long distance travel to cows going about 2 times as fast with a load more weight to carry @purplepoppy So if you think the speed of humans and their endurance was for hunting you'd be barking up trees at squirrels a lot. That endurance was so we could forage and wander for long distances at slow pace to keep ourself fed from less abundant produce that wasn't likely to charge us or run away.

Humans have been raping, murdering and eating other humans for eons too but that doesn't mean that's optimum and even less the right thing to do. NATURALLY humans are plant eaters (digestive system closer to other mammals and the digestive juices concentration more akin to those found in other plant eating mammals. We've evolved the ability to destroy areas the size of towns through tools of mass destruction, does that mean we should be using them? You are aware I hope that something like 60% of ALL crops grown feed livestock? THAT accounts for about 15% of the over consumption of humans in the world. 60% leading to 15% isn't very efficient (but BACON I hear coming) and then there's the land and water used for those same 60 billion animals grown EACH YEAR just to provide the consumers with "palate" gratification. So the notion that feeding the few (how often do livestock go hungry when there are people on the streets starving?) their preferred flesh while destroying the landscape and environment at the expense of the atmosphere (as much carbon emitted from animal agriculture as ALL personal motor vehicle usage in the world but then climate change denial can come in) and the sewage produce and dealt with from those 60 billion lives EACH year has to end up in the soil and sea and THAT is another trauma since the biggest consumer of antibiotics and antidepressants are animals and that shit doesn't get into the food products so ends up in the sewage/water ways for other life forms to absorb.
NO, humans aren't predators they're exploiters of technology and abusers of animals for gratification at the expense of environment, atmosphere, oceans and land.

No I don't feel ripped off. I know salaries are high here so I make decisions accordingly. I don't go eating out unless I feel like spending some money. I just invited my mom out for some food yesterday and it was great. But I don't eat out that often. Most of the time I cook or I eat something simple at home. You just have to make decisions that fit with your goals.
Food is expensive. Believe it or not at least here in NZ wholesale suppliers do not have better deals than the supermarket. My work currently is paying $1.20 PER EGG. So yeah, your single portion spinach, feta, basil & garlic quiche with a side salad is gonna be $10 and your big ol glass of chocolate strawberry mouse with brownie bits is gonna be $8

@Cuminginside no this is what happens with inflation and a prime minister who head resembles an egg but is unfortunately not crackable. We also still have guns... Supermarket prices are less eggspensive. My post was to point out wholesale cost vs consumer costs. Majority of people think that because commercial businesses are buying in bulk it makes it cheaper, definitely true with some things but quite the opposite with others.

I used work in Chealsea and to go to a place called the Stockpot; it was pretty much school meals at reasonable prices. (For the septics, Chealsea is one of the most expensive parts of London, one of the most expensive cities in the world.)
Apart from that? Yes, they're over priced (although there's a pizza place near where I live in London that sells full size pizzas from £6 to £10).
Nice for a treat, though. You don't both have to eat the same, or the leftovers the next day.
Most restaurants I have been into are getting way over priced. I went to McDs for coffee the other day my friend picked up an sausage & egger one of those potato patties & a coffee. It was close to $14. A small coffee is only a $1 though. Then again almost everything has gone way up. About the only thing not going up much is my wages.
Around me we can spend $65 for breakfast. A good breakfast, nothing very special, and it seems like it went up substantially from a few years ago. I have noticed that some restaurants are coming down a bit now. With all of the delivery business and that so many people do not cook at home, it seems restaurants are in demand and can raise their prices or simply keep them high from the days of shipping problems during Covid.
Some are extortionate such as many in London, (that's why I get Reubens £11 for sandwich with almost an inch of hot sliced salt beef, sauerkraut, gherkins, cheese, thousand island dressing and house mustard that kicks like a horse unstably perched between two slices of caraway rye bread)
£30 a head is a celebration only
Cheaper places also yield better business as a gold dealer
Overpricing in relation to what? Minimum wage? Yes, everything is Decent income? Those can still afford a restaurant meal
But you end up in a cycle because lowering food prices will lower the wages of the food industry workers created even more poverty than we already have

Depends how you look at it. Compared to staying home and cooking the same meal yourself, yes. However, by the time you factor in staff wages, energy, rent, etc, most restaurants actually have a really slim profit margin - only around 5% on average - so it's unfair to label them a ripoff.
Some restaurants are overpriced but many are not. The other day, I had a very nice shepherd's pie in an Irish pub in Southeast US that was only 9 dollars. Very tasty, and a nice-sized serving.
I think so I haven't bought fast food in years I prefer to use the money to buy my alcoholic drinks every day it's a lot less expensive and they taste and feel mmmmm so good
Well, the food and (especially) the alcoholic beverages in the restaurants we frequent are definitely overpriced.

@dcvsmarvel Thanks to Trump? What is one restaurant price that's gone up since he has been in office? According to Reuters, a leftist new outlet, prices have jumped 62% since 2021.
I go to my local Mexican restaurant and it's priced from $9 for the daily special to $14 on the plates. It's reasonably priced though tacos are $2.39 where I could make them at home for less than it cost.
Given the cost of groceries right now I am challenged to duplicate some meals for less at home.
