During the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe famously replied "NUTS!" to a German demand for the surrender of the surrounded American forces in Bastogne. The Germans, who expected a formal response, were confused by this slang. When asked for clarification, McAuliffe's staff explained it meant "Go to hell".
This terse and defiant reply became a defining symbol of American resilience and was widely celebrated in the press. McAuliffe's leadership helped the 101st Airborne Division hold Bastogne until reinforcements arrived, marking a pivotal moment in the Allied counteroffensive.
