Have you ever eaten a pet?

Question

In farming, you'll often get young animals rejected by their mother's or babies that didn't quite make it. Normally, you just give a reject to a mother who's lost one and all's fine. If you need a "spare" lamb you can buy one really cheaply off Facebook for that purpose.

Of course these excess baby animals also make excellent pets. You get a cute playful lamb or calf that'll want hugs and eartickles, chase balls etc.

But they often get too big and bored with humans even a little unfriendly or dangerous to handle. It's not a problem because cows, sheep, pigs, chickens etc are all delicious.

So have you ever had an edible pet, and did you actually eat it?

Yes, but i didn’t know it.
When i was young, my family kept chickens, rabbits, ducks and pigs. I named them all and took care of them. They were pets to me. My parents had to hide the fact that they were livestock for as long as they could. They knew it would break me.
One day i returned to the kitchen after collecting eggs. I told my mother that Henny Penny, our most domesticated hen, was missing. As she was frying chicken on the stovetop she replied, “Weasel musta got her.”.
Ignorance really was bliss.
I didn’t learn the truth of everything until it was time to harvest the pigs. We sold them for meat, so my dad didn’t slaughter and clean them himself. Instead, i saw a truck pull up and load my pigs into a trailer and leave. I cried myself to sleep.
Not too long after that, my father exposed me to the slaughter of one of our chickens.
I didn’t take that any better.

It’s a wonder that i’m not a vegetarian after that experience. If ever a time comes where i have to k*ll my own meat to eat it, i probably will be.

Yes when I was about 5 the kid down the street was going to the store I asked my mom if I could go with him she said ok. All the way there we talked about the candy we were going to get. All I had was 50 cents. We got to the store there was a guy selling baby chicken For twenty five cents a piece so I got two of them

Got home Showed my parents. My dad said well. You better build a chicken coop I Saud what's that he Told me these are not pets so don't get attached to them. And I don't know how many months later it was. But he called me to the back yard. Have a tree stump in the middle of the handed me a hathat's it and said o k this is what you need to do. In my little brain I'm sure when I was saying no. It really was saying. WTF. NO. Well you know the rest of the story. I didn't eat chicken for about 2 months.

I had a best friend in high school that I lost touch with and her mom recently bought a chicken coup for their yard and now plan on eating home made chicken and eggs. I am surprised it is legal to raise chickens in the suburbs because it is not legal in China.

My parents tried to raise chickens in the suburbs when they were kids and as soon as the chickens were big enough, the police would confiscate them.

It happened every year, they would raise the chickens for a few months by buying the babies from farmers, and then the government would remove them from their home when they got big enough and tell them raising chickens is illegal in the cities.

My crazy uncle ate his neighbor's racing 🐢. He saw it wondering in his back yard and ended up killing it and eating it. The little neighbor kid asked him if he saw it and my uncle pointed to the woods, when the kid walked over there, all he found was a shell with the number 7 on it.

My father had a steer. I called him Jose. We fed him for a year or so and my father rented a trailer and we took him to the butcher. I led him into a chute and as he walked he turned to look at me. The next time I saw him he was in little white packages. He was tasty however

Having been raised on a farm. You learn not to let yourself get attached to barn animals. They come and go. Unless they are a milking cow. Then they usually stick around for a while!
