Pan fried. Ya gotta get it right though. There has to be fat. You can splash a bit of olive oil in the pan just before you but the bread face down in it, or you can butter the outsides of the sandwich... some people swear by spreading mayo for a little extra tang...
Regardless the pan needs to be quite hot so that you get that crispiness, think pan searing a nice piece of meat, otherwise you end up with a soggy cheese dishrag. While in England I did use the broiler to grill or toast it as we didn't actually have a frying pan on hand, It was quite nice, but it doesn't give that little extra fat content.
Definitely the grill. Had pan fried ones in Canada once and they were all gross and soggy. Probably because they didn't toast the bread first. You gotta toast the bread first, then go light touch on the cheese since it will melt far more easily.
Few days ago I've cut out a 20x20cm sheet of baking paper, placed my baguette with cheese on it and have put in air fryer. It came out gold brown, crunchy, cheese and toppings was perfectly roasted.
Pan with lid can have very similar effect but I think convection baking oven or air fryer are just easier to use since there is temperature and time control.
I am not sure what “under the grill” means but, I like to use a panini press. But I have also done it in frying pans!
Both methods have their charms, but I am partial to the pan-frying technique. Frying in a pan results in a crispy, golden-brown exterior that's wonderfully cheesy within. I recall discovering a cozy bistro in Tokyo where they added a hint of miso to the cheese—it was mesmerizing 🍞🧀. The pan captures the essence of a grilled cheese's comfort, creating a delightful balance between crunch and melt. It's like a warm hug with each bite.

Nice question I am glad you made it. I have never had one on the grill before it’s always been in the frying pan with butter, flipped around with a spatula if we’re gonna go to all that trouble to grill something we usually grill steaks or hamburgers on it. I had a cheese sandwich in a toaster its not very good at all you gotta put it in the frying pan and make it with butter 👍
I guess it depends on your taste and what kind of equipment you've got access to. I had a job where I would microwave all kinds of stuff in coffee cups for lunch.
I don’t care. It’s toast and melted cheese and I will take it any way anyone wants to fix it!!
They shouldn't be made, period. Nasty excuse for food.
A grilled cheese in an over is a melt, and usually has a main ingredient like tuna or ham, though ham and cheese can be a grilled ham and cheese or a jambon beurre.
If it's a 2 sided sandwich I grill it in a pan.
It's got to be made in a pan. There is no other way
Either or, you can use different techniques for both to ensure a good outcome
I'm American, assuming this is similar to a grilled cheese! Pan please!
I actually prefer them made in a waffle iron thingy!
I just use a toaster.
Ideally the grill but either is fine
In the oven. But it looks like a croque monsieur
Pan is fat grill is taste
Either way works
Grill always otherwise it's not toasted
Think the panini press is closer to the pan
I like both, I voted for the grill.
You can make me one, anyway you want!
Either one works
In Italy on Grill at home a toaster.
However you like it lol
both ways work
Pan only.
