Should we use mini pizza wheels instead of knives to eat pizza?

When you order a pizza, they'll usually run a large pizza wheel over it to cut it into triangles. We then sit with our knives and forks to eat it.

But why are we using traditional cutlery? If knife isn't suitable to trianglize the pizza why is it suitable to eat one?

Wouldn't it be better if we had a smaller version of the pizza wheel we could hold like a knife?

We Americans don't use cutlery to eat pizza. We pick up each slice and take a bite, eating pizza kind of like a sandwich

Interesting story. Several years ago, my company was involved in a project in East London. I and my American colleagues often had lunch at a local pub that served pizza. We noticed that everyone ate pizza with cutlery, while we ate with our fingers. After a few weeks, the locals started eating with their fingers too. The pub owner thanked us, it reduced his overall cost of having to wash all that cutlery and having to frequently replace them.

My wife and I use a wheel like the one in the photo to cut our pizzas. A knife would be more work. The wheel makes it easy.

Once we cut the pizza into triangles, we pick them up and hold them to eat them. A knife and fork would seem like a strange way to eat pizza.

I love this idea, it feels like something you’d see in a playful pizzeria in Tokyo or Naples 😄

The big wheel is perfect for fast, straight cuts on a whole pie, but at the table you usually just need small, precise moves. A knife works well for that and is safer, easier to clean, cheaper, and more versatile.

Mini wheels would be fun, but probably gimmicky, messy, and harder to control, especially on thin or very hot slices.

Otherwise, yeah i use a pizza wheel to slice my store bought pizzas; even if i have no intention to share. Pro tip: buy the fancy, reputable expensive one! Cheap ones go dull pretty quickly and they are a real pain to sharpen.
In summary, spend a lot on your pizza cutter but eat your slices with your hands. Or i’ll call the pizza police on you.

worthy idea. not in the USA, increase incidence of people cutting limbs off, murders by way of cutting wheels due to political disagreements, cutting wheels thrown and injuring innocent people at protests. Then we'd have to pass laws requiring proper storing and training of cutting wheels, registration, ID's printed on them, licensing, cutting wheel insurance, vision tests.

Stick with the hands in USA, thankfully so many have never been trained to turn them into lethal weapons.

That kind of cutting wheel may be useful in case a pizza has to be shared with other people, but honestly I prefer by far a plain knive and fork, if not just my hands. Well, that is also after the pizza has been cut in equal parts with the wheel ;0)

Yes those are a good idea. We have that in America. I haven’t seen them in a long time, but I used to have one. it does get the job done but you have to press down hard to get it to cut through.
