I’ve had it a few times while road-tripping through the southern US, usually in small diners where the gravy is made from the pan drippings and the crust is extra crunchy.

I love it with fluffy mashed potatoes, green beans, and a buttery biscuit.

Ref your update, that looks a lot like a Denny’s breakfast meal. Here it’s not legit country fried (aka chicken fried) steak unless it’s covered with gravy with mashed potatoes and green beans, served for lunch or dinner.
