Have you ever fried a turkey?

I have wanted to do this for a while and have been asking around if anyone hada turkey fryer I can borrow. I suppose I will have to buy one. You can boil corn on the cob ot lobsters too so I guess there is that.

No I have not. I have known some people, though, who almost burned their house down using an oil fryer. They are really dangerous. Dropping a wet bird into boiling oil causes an eruption of very hot oil that can set all kinds of things on fire.

I suppose you could forget to turn it off and burn the house down, as you leave screaming in pain for the hospital to get treatment for the oil burns.

It's better to separate and to debone meat pieces from bigger birds. Wings and legs need longer baking or frying time than breast meat. However I understand desire of some people to put whole big bird on the table, like in Europe some people put feathers, neck and head in baked pheasant so it doesn't look like a chicken.

Despite the fact British food is often deep fried, I've never known anyone here to do it. Deep fried chicken pieces is as close as we get.

I think the issue is turkey is a Christmas meat to us and the weather is too shit to deep fry in the garden

Yes, turkey frying is definitely something to be done outdoors, preferably away from any wooden structures.

Yeah. My brother tried to do that one Thanksgiving but he'd never done it before. He had the pilot lit for the burner but didn't know what the pilot was vs. When it's operating so he waited and waited for it to get up to temp but it wasn't. Finally he decided Thanksgiving was going to be over if he waited any longer. And we were all hungry by this point.🤣 so he just stuck the turkey in hoping it finish getting up to temp with the turkey in. Well of course it didn't because it was still on pilot but he didn't know that. So then he started monkeying with it and finally after a couple hours it kicked on. But sitting in that oil for as long as it did it didn't cook right and was rubbery as hell. We joke about it to this day comparing it to the Turkey off National lampoon's Christmas vacation. You know when Clark Griswold cuts into the turkey and it splits open.🤣

My son did it before and he had no problem. I thought that I would borrow the fryer from him but it turned out he borrowed one from a friend.

It's really good done right.
Do yourself and your local fire department a favor and do it well away from any structures.
It's not hard but there are some steps you must follow or else you will have a big mess and a fire on your hands.

Yes I have. You obviously have to do it outside. Make sure you do it where the dripping oil won’t make a stain. Then you have to constantly check the temperature of the oil so that it won’t exceed the max temperature and also check the internal temperature of the bird.

It's the most delicious turkey you will ever have but if you've never done it before have a chef do it, many people have explosions or burn their house down or end up dead.

Just looking at that thing and imagining it fills with hot oil scares me a lot. How the heck do you get the turkey out once it's cooked?

@msc545 I watched a video and the guy heated up the oil, than turned off the propane and slowly lowered the turkey into the hot oil. Then he turned the propane back on and let it cook for 45 minutes. Hen he shut the propane off again and slowly pulled the turkey out. You have to poke holes i nthe turkey beforehand so the oil will drain out.
