I don't really see this as different from something like having a big butt.
Black women used to walk up extra straight to hide how big their butts are.
People want to be cool and they will do what it takes to be cool. (By cool i mean hot, sexy, etc. anything that is seen as desirable.)
You are attempting to redefine cool based on yourself and you can't because cool is a concept of the ego, the ego needs references, in other words you are trying to be ok with not being desirable to other people.
I guess my point is I don't really see what's wrong with dressing in the style of your era. I wouldn't be surprised if that kind of hair suddenly becomes popular and then white women are paying to get their hair less straight.
This "I love me" crusade is noble, but you should warn black girls that a majority of men won't be as attracted to them as they would be if the girl has straight hair. Not at least today.
I completely disagree with your outlook. You are referring to a mindset that has existed since slavery days as a "trend". A trend is something that's done for a significant amount of time (it fades away), and then the new-fad replaces it. (the repetitive cycle further continues). Until you understand that this is not a trend, and a much deeper issue that carries from generation to generation, then you will not understand even a LINE from this article. It's okay if black women want to wear their hair straight. (That isn't the issue). The problem is when one HATES themselves and does this because they feel the further away from their natural phenotype, the better they are. "Good hair" is a ignorant term that has negative connotation. I am high lighting the fact that the only good hair that exists is healthy and strong. I am taking out that negative connotation and letting every one know, no matter what ethnicity they are. They are beautiful. You do not need to identify with the white
Don't you think it's a bit unfair to accuse someone of being self-hating when they've been raised around a eurocentric ideal? So you are talking about being beautiful to yourself not being beautiful to others?
Also, how do you know African hair won't one day be popular in the States? You can't know that you're claiming knowledge of the future.
I also appreciate that you're replying to me an equally respectful manner... that is rare for this site.
I'm not accusing anyone of anything. I am just speaking about my observations as a black woman. I've personally witnessed self hatred from my own people which has a lot to do with the images that are displayed and the disadvantage they automatically have in society. Times are changing, now people are becoming more accepting. But there is still a lot of work to be done , look how many years it took to get a president of color. "You're talking about being beautiful to yourself and not to others". True self esteem comes from within. Compliments that you hear from others is just a bonus. A person should not look to others in order to have self worth. if someone truly loves themselves it will not matter how society perceives them. "Also, how do you know African hair won't one day popular in the states". Hopefully one day that will happen. I am not here to be a psychic or ones fortune teller. I am solely speaking about the now. This is...
Is something that is still occurring. The only way for a big change like that to happen is if people work towards that change. I am one of them. I'm here to empower and uplift. Change doesn't happen without significant work. This goes beyond just a hair style. This article is speaking about an outlook that is instilled in some in their young years of life
Quotes are not always agreeable. They have to do with the person who wrote them perspective.
I think beauty is when one accepts themselves and all of their flaws. They are contented with the things they cannot change. They love themselves and all of the attributes they have to offer. This allows their self esteem to grow. They are beautiful if they feel as such and should not compare themselves to any standard.
that's the definition. I gues the conflict comes because men in particular are very attracted to the definition... you on the other hand seem to dislike it. I guess we just have to accept that what we want in you is not what you want to be. maybe another girl does...
There were several points I made that you didn't answer. I think we at talking at each other if anything. This whole topic is just won't of those things you will not understand because you are the opposite race and personally haven't gone through any of this. I notice most people your race have a similar reaction they have no idea what I am speaking about or give poor examples that show no relating to the topic. Anyway , thanks for answering Good day !
@itsallover In the women's defense I guess it was a bit insulting to say it doesn't look good on black women. It's not bad, it just doesn't look as good as what their natural hair would look like.
I guess no matter what I'm still just another cracker telling black people how to exist *shrug*
Awesome take, people shouldn't conform to the standards perpetuated by the media and be their own people. Whether it be in what they see as beautiful or what opinions they hold.

The only people who care about "good hair" are black people. White people really don't care. In fact, I wish I had hair like a black dude because it's totally low maintenance.
I have to disagree. Longer hair tangles. With long afro textured hair it can easily break if it's not oiled frequently and washed once weekly. if it's not braided it will become hard to comb and take a part. It's a lot of work
Well, personally I'm not light skin with bone straight hair. never been a fan of straight hair. I live my afro textured hair. even though it's not curly or tightly coiled with a definite s pattern.
And that is the point of this article. It is to spread awareness about issues inside the black community (and other cultures) and to encourage those to love themselves.
Other ethnicities like Jews stay closely bonded together and respect eachothers words and speeches. Why can't we do the same? Instead of being aggressive with each other
If you love who you are... great ! Carry on. I am allowed to encourage others in my own community and many others.
People should with whatever hair they like most on them or makes them happiest. I'm white but I have very dark hair that's pretty but doesn't look good next to my skin tone. So, I lighten it. It doesn't mean I'm rejecting my roots. I just feel prettier this way. Most white girls with blonde hair are coloring it too. Women are changing their hair whether through color or perms to make them feel the most attractive. What's wrong w that?
@miramiraonthewall Made a great point when she said certain people would not understand this. Those that do not tend to be White because they personally have not gone through this so they can't even begin to fathom where I am coming from. Those that do understand are ethnic people (as proven in the comments). To an extent you are ignorant to real issues that exist. I expect this because on your side everything must be dainty. There's nothing wrong with people changing their look. That is not what my issue is nor that is not even what this article states. I only have a problem when people use the term "good hair" which has a racist meaning behind it. They have this whole outlook that anything towards blackness is less beautiful. I am re-defining the term "good hair " and stating it simply only means strong and healthy. Lets take out that negative meaning. Lets be proud of who we are instead of trying to demean others. This issue goes even far beyond the term "good hair". It
has to do with self hatred that is engraved into some from their beginning of life. Photos, media , our lives experience all show a certain image that is portrayed as beautiful. This article is simply telling people to love themselves instead of basing their beauty on the white standard.
Clearly you lost all ability to read if you think there's whining in this article. It's put here to inspire people to love themselves regardless of society's standards. You probably didn't read anything and only skimmed. I'd do the same if I had abilities that were hindering my development in society.
You're an idiot. This isn't about whining , this is about me wanting people to embrace who they are no matter their hair texture , skin etc. Maybe if you were not illiterate you would be able to read and comprehend without me having to explain. Also it's sad that you discriminate amongst all people when you are a Jew and were almost wiped out by Hitler.
”like a white person's hair” made me wonder... because they might be thinking it's like an Asian person's hair especially with the hair colour being black/dark brown

Just washed my hair and it's in it's "good hair" form. Nice , frizzy and curly.

Although I am disagreeing with you. I applaud you for expressing your view in a mature and healthy manner (unlike some users below).

"a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight."---beauty is aesthetic.

Good day !
Love this take. Our hair is what makes black people so unique, so many different textures and it's so versatile.
Im white with thick kinda wavy hair. Personally I think Asians have the best hair.
Just my opinion, don't hurt me 😣
also this article is pretty interesting

I actually prefer Black women with their natural hair as opposed to straight hair. Straight hair doesn't look good on black women.
Lol the downvotes though.. says a lot.

Assuming the black men don't have long hair , yes it is low maintenance.
It's all low maintenance compared to white hair.

Anonymous user it's FAR from low maintenance...
Nahhh it's definitely higher maintenance than white hair. I have to get my brother a shape up on his high top every week
Very good Take. I love it! Go on with your bad self.
Well, personally I'm not light skin with bone straight hair. never been a fan of straight hair. I live my afro textured hair. even though it's not curly or tightly coiled with a definite s pattern.
I wish people could just keep the hair that makes them comfortable.
I am black and I am kind of over the whole black speech talks. I like my hair, period..

That girl with the afro looks hawwwt!
jews have the same problem and you dont see us whining every 5 minutes
Jews control everything that's why they're not whining

@Stacyzee, no need for me to read through all your whining. i get the gist of why your so angry. i got a solution for you:
shave your head. problem solved.
