What fear is to me

Do you know what fear is? Fear is that moment you miss three calls from your mom. Fear is getting to work, realizing you left your business papers at home. Fear is that moment you drop a hot cup of coffee, and you have nothing to protect your bare feet from the pain.

Sure, that can be what fear is. But it isn’t true fear. True fear is getting a “We need to talk.” Text from your lover. True fear is when you get a call and you find out a family member you love is in the hospital. True fear is when you’re standing at the alter and they’re not coming. Why is this any different from what’s stated above?

The difference is with true fear; you don’t know what’s next. With the missed calls, you know your mom is going to nag you. You know your boss may demote you or simply give you a warning. You know you’re going to get burned from your coffee.

True fear is you don’t know what’s coming next. Like a jump scare in a horror movie, it’s unexpected. You don’t know if your lover is going to leave you or if it’s something good. You don’t know if your family member is dying, or got in an accident. You don’t know where your lover is and you’re anticipating them.

The thing is, you just don’t know. That is what true fear is.
