The Catholic rosary is a series of prayers with a specific structure and pattern, but can be modified to suit your daily needs. If you are feeling ill, miss your friend, tend to procrastinate too much, or have too much guilt in your life over things you did wrong or failed to do, the rosary is there for you; and since it has a repetitive structure, that may be helpful in meditating on the mysteries (which repeat the gospel narrative) or a positive intention (a wish in good faith for yourself, someone you love, or someone whose soul is in peril).
Here is my experience and perceived benefits of praying the rosary.
- Discipline. Reminding yourself to pray the rosary at least 4 times a day (morning, mid-day, afternoon, and evening) or just once a day may give you some discipline in your life.
- Positivity. Much of the rosary is shaping your mind to think with good intentions for others and yourself. You use the time to reflect on what you did wrong or failed to do and offer intentions to the Virgin Mary, so that her son, Jesus, can help you become a better person and make the world a better, safer, sounder place to live in.
- Tranquility. Your mind is put at ease for a moment, as you focus less on the chaos of the world and more on finding that inner peace. Your thoughts become centered on the mysteries and the intentions.
- Convenience. You just need your 10 fingers, each finger representing a single decade.
- Sin Deterrent. Just when your mind gravitates toward thinking sinful thoughts (i.e. sabotaging your neighbor's work out of jealousy, getting even when someone has wronged you instead of turning the other cheek, thinking you're better than God, thinking you are God), you can always start a new round of the rosary and start thinking positive! Use a rosary as a way to think about how you can become a better person and improve your relationships with others instead of dwelling on wicked thoughts aimed at making other people's lives miserable or reducing the worthiness and dignity of a human being.
Although I personally just do the Catholic rosary, I think the structure of the rosary can be secularized. Instead of actually saying the prayers, you can just replace the preamble of the rosary with good thoughts about the people around you (friends and foes). Then, you ask a higher power (your better self, humanity, Mother Nature, etc.) to hope for good things to happen to everyone. To people who have wronged you, you may hope for a sincere repentance and the willpower to confront that person of the wrongdoing somehow. Such a habit can encourage mindfulness of your surroundings and be proactive in the world.
