Why would a girl be nervous/uncomfortable when I start a conversation but more relaxed when she starts it?

Most of the time i'll initiate and she'll respond, but she looks nervous so after a few tries, i'll stop. If a few minutes pass without either of us saying a word, she'll come up and ask me some random question it start a conversation, making good eye contact and everything then after i take the initiative, she'll go back to the lack of eye contact and nervousness.

Sometimes we can talk just fine with no pauses but when it happens seems totally random. Usually if one of her friends is around, she will act really funny and take charge and tease me all the time but when she is alone, she calms down.

I like talking to her but how can i make her to relax a little? Its just weird that sometimes she'll be confident and others she is all fidgety, any advice?

I like the way you observe your girl, sounds caring.
But.. just give her a chance to be herself, if sometimes you both have nothing to talk about, its ok.. no need to bring up something to talk about, just hold her hand and relax. If you are relax, she will relax. I think she feels little unsecure yet.

She gets nervous when you start it because she doesn't know what to say. But when she starts it, she has the chance to think about what to say and lead the conversation.

Should i keep initiating or wait for her to say something? If you were in this position what would you like the guy to do?

She comes to you because she wants to talk to you. Keep talking to her but make it casual small talk so she'll relax. Make it fun, and crack so jokes if your good at it :P If this was me I would just need time to get used to it. The nervousness will eventually pass. You know it's working when she initiates even more conversation and isn't so nervous when you do.
