Why do women fish for compliments?

Ok so a female colleague got her hair cut, I askedher if she got her hair cut. She said yeah do you like it?

Girl - Omg I'm so ugly.
Guy - No you're not.
Girl - Stop lying I know I'm ugly.
Guy - No seriously you're really pretty.

From my experience, people who really think they're ugly, don't actually say just like they don't look in the mirror very often.

Lol while I have had a few people tell. me that to my face, subtly and not so subtly, I meant it starts with them saying I'm pretty.

Example:

Girl: You're so pretty.
Me: Not really, but thank you.

It's second nature to respond that way for me.
