Why are women so stingy with compliments?

Why are women so stingy with complimenting men? Like, a lady may like a man for several months, and receive many compliments from him during that time, but she rarely, if ever, reciprocates. Is it intentional?

I don't like giving compliments just for the sake of giving them, nor do I like or expect compliments just for the sake of being complimented. My favorite boyfriend I've ever had pretty much only complimented my appearance once (in the 4 months we dated) and that was one of the things I loved about him. The one time he called me gorgeous was when I was all dolled up for the prom, and that's how I knew he really meant it.

Like the AU below me mentioned, I'll give a compliment when I feel they deserve one. I won't just compliment someone because they're around, or because they complimented me.

I conpliment people all the time, especially guys I date. In fact, I was usually the only one giving compliments.

I think it differs from person to person but there is a pattern. Men are more open to speaking their mind & what they think than women.

Women give complements to men usually sincerely.

I think a lot of girls are just insecure. Sadly, women are judged on their beauty. If someone tells a woman she's beautiful, it's like a reassuring thing.
