I personally think it makes them look older and it's unflattering. It's like renouncing to a part of their femininity. And it's as if after a certain age you can't be feminine anymore. Before I get bashed: Yes very short hair doesn't necessarily mean masculine BUT you can't deny that in mainstream beauty standards longer hair is more linked with femininity than short hair. And yes I'm aware that they're free to do whatever they want with their hair.

Yes, pretty much. But then again the female's body renounces on femininity by itself after menopause. Remember that estrogen, the "female" hormone by excellence, drastically declines on women during menopause. So your feminine features will also decline, estrogen also also promotes health of the female reproductive organs (elasticity, moisturizing) and skin health in general.
Women's progesterone levels also decline, which causes an imbalance in testosterone levels (the primary male hormone) leading them to increase in the female's body. This also causes libido problems, women's sexual desire generally decreases during this stage, and so their priorities in life. For some though, sex drive actually increases after menopause, which may be a problem since vagina moisture, elasticity, and blood supply isn't the ideal.
I'm bringing this up because as you say, it is a pattern for most women to cut their hair, among several other attitudes when they age. So there's obviously a subconscious awareness of such things. I'm sure dudes also change habits as they go, we're all going to be old fucks one day so we have to change as things change I suppose.
I don't wanna try to be mean to you cause I actually like you, but you should probably educate yourself on this matter. As you get older your hair cycle becomes shorter. Your hair follicles have short hair cycles and you would be surprised by how many older people not necessarily have female or male pattern baldness, but just different types of hair loss conditions. Your hairs go through 3 different hair cycles anagen phase this is when your hairs grow about 90% of your hairs are in this phase on your scalp, then the catagen phase this is when your hairs rest, and then the telogen phase this is when your old hairs fall out about 10% of your hairs are in this phase in your scalp.
I've said since I was very small!! I had noticed a bunch of ladies with this boy hair, and then my mom's sisters, and some of her friends started having this same ugly do... So I quickly said to my mother that she better not even thnk about cutting her hear like that. I told her they look old and not pretty. So she never cut it and she still has her nice long hair.
I really don't understand why they do it. It's awful in every way. I just imagine they become too lazy to dedicate anytime to their hair (because they're old), so decide that by having this boy look will take them max 5-8 mins to fix it and go. ... in my opinion, if you're using your age as an excuse , like "I'm too old to spend time on fixing my hair" type of thing, then 'you're too old to be going to work!' In that case. ... It's not "old" is more 'lazy' than anything else.. ... And then they wonder why their husband is cheating in them. 😯🙊
Long hair can be easy to maintain. Whether I keep it short or long, I wash and wear. I usually don't curl it or put product in and get compliments. It's not super hard.
@peachblossomluck No, I mean a lot of women use that excuse... Which is why I said if they use that as an excuse, then it's safe to say you're also too old to be going to work... Or simply too old to do anything at all... ... like I said, my mother has long hair and she does just fine wit it... And looks way younger than all her sisters and her friends, even if they are about the same age... And @blondfrog I am not a troll.., I'm not sure how both of you took my opinion as something negative or whatever... But, whatever. 😁
For once I hear babies pull on it a lot, so a lot of women cut it when they become mothers. The of course it takes maintenance and women with families tend to have less time than college girls.
Hair fades with age. Your hair doesn't look as good at 50 as it did at 20. For both men and women hair tends to become thin and doesn't look as good. For example look at young thick haired Hillary clinton
I think it's rather sad to define femininity by the length of your hair. I kinda expect it from guys, but would think most girls are smart enough to value themselves for more than that. Yes there are some societal beauty standards, it doesn't mean you have to base your self preception on it.
It's one thing if you get your long hair styled professionally every day.
However, most older women that I see with long hair out and about DON'T have that and end up looking witchy. As in, "hide your children because the witch is going to steal them and make them into soup."
Your hair loses moisture and body as you age so it looks scraggly, coarse and dry when left long. I think it's much more flattering to have a sharp, modern short cut than a frumpy grandma bun. But then again, I have always had very hip grandparents.
I think it's probably an up-keep thing. When you cut your hair super short, you don't necessarily have to worry about styling it every day. And I'm sure that as you grow older, you start to realize that things as trivial as hair length simply don't matter. It's not giving up their femininity, it's learning that you can still have it and love the way you look without the hassle of listening to mainstream beauty standards. It's being more comfortable with yourself.
yeah I don't understand it, I guess it is jus that they don't want to bother with it anymore. I can understand how much trouble it is when you are young and it's long. but when they are old, they don't even have to do anything to style it if they don't want to. if they just brush it it would look good. I think long hair gives girls/women a more vibrant and fun, and youthful image (even though that's not the word I'm looking for). Long hair makes them seem friendlier and would, if they were looking for it, help them get a guy. like a girl who puts a lot into the way she looks, and hasn't given up on it.
Maybe the long hair becomes uncomfortable for them with the menopausal hot flashes and whatnot? My friend's mom got a buzzcut and I was like what the heck? She said her long hair was literally giving her headaches. I'm an older woman and I'm growing my hair out long again. I miss how pretty is was and how versatile.
I think they think it's "more grown up" or sophisticated. I prefer the long hair personally and I'm always disappointed when I hear someone has cut theirs. Like recently Kaley Cuoco cutting hers. I though "NOOOO, WHY?" lol
getting old= looks fading looks fading= less favors from men less favors from men= more work by herself more work by herself= no time to make up no time to make up= cutting down on mascara and hair and other things which take your time
I think she looks just fine in the picture. Also, long hair is a lot of upkeep and as you get older, it's just too much of a hassle. Long hair looks nice, but I actually think that for her age and how she looks now, short hair is best for her. I feel like longer hair wouldn't truly do her justice.
I think cause it requires less work to maintain... also when you get older the quality of your hair isn t as good anymore. the hair breaks down faster some can t even grow tall hair anymore. like my mum, her hair doesn t grow much no matter how much she tries...
Long or short doesn't matter she is old now... she have different priorities. She understood over time that looking good is nothing but just a self satisfactory illusion.. which she lost interest now...
White hair flatterin? White hair are gross... they should dye 'em at least... and I think short hair suits older ladies better... a 60 year old lady wid long hair... if she doesn't have a young-lookin' face... then she's gonna look like a crossdresser...
Well, I cut my hair very short, and I still get the same male attention as before. It didn't make me "unattractive" at all. Also, shorter hair is easier to manage, and frankly the long hair just looked too childish on me. Made me look way too demure/innocent. I genuinely hated women's reaction too, like "omg why cut your hair?" etc. Just because I cut my hair, doesn't mean I'm not a woman anymore. I basically wanted to say f off to what women should look like.
I don't know. maybe it's just easier to maintain and you reached a point in life where you don't care anymore what other people think. but they are also a different generation, I'm not sure how it was back then but maybe shorter hair was a bit more popular than now...
Yeah, this is pretty common. My mom cut her hair a year or two ago and it really works for her, but for a lot of other women it's just blahzay. I think they think it makes them look better for their age or something.
don't forget.. hair gets thinner and emptier with age :( ( your first pic is photoshopped by the way ) If they let it grow long they'll lose it all --' trust me.. I'm only 16 but I keep cutting it short so I don't look bold
hair starts thinning, generally its believed once you hit a certain age having long hair looks " too young" for an old face. But a lot of women today still look young into their 50's and dress young so , dont worry about it.
It is much easier to manage Depending on age menopause will have an effect. Hair can become more brittle, take longer to grow, become thinner... none of these things look good with long hair...
generally, short hair makes someone look younger. it bring more liveliness. being feminine is not the top list, rather look younger and not time consuming

why do women grow mustaches and become more manly and aggressive as they age? hormones. testosterone rises up estrogens fall down with age. so why not show that hormonal change with style choices as well... ?
Some women look better with short hair than with long. And I think they do it because they want to look more serious and sophisticated. Plus, I guess our hair starts getting weak as we get older.
actually it makes them look more youthful and when you are young you have long luscious hair but old folks don't. Long hair is also very high-maintenance and ain't nobody got time for that.
I agree. I don't ever plan on cutting my hair short. lol I think old people are more delicate and frail and maybe styling their hair is too much for them. Like if they have arthritis or something.
