Can someone please explain how having a racial preference is NOT racist?

It's really annoying when people specifically exclude one particular group (that I won't mention) and claim that it's just not their preference and that it doesn't make them a racist.

Excluding a group and saying "it's just my preference" seems like a cop out so you don't have to confront or explain your true racist feelings.

Most of the people that have racial preferences do not intend on ever dating an unfavorable race, which makes it not actually a "preference".

I am not comparing people to dogs, but think of it this way: Say you want to own a small brown dog. It doesn't mean you hate large or white dogs. It doesn't mean you don't think those other types of dogs are cute. You just don't want to own one.

Discrimination happens all the time. It happens when you choose to buy the red shirt instead of the blue one. When you decide you want to go to Kroger Grocery instead of Harris Teeter Grocery. It happens when you decide whether to eat that candy bar or eat that energy bar.

It really isn't racist. Racist people generalize, have prejudice, and discriminate. Racism is hate. If you are saying something like, "I don't want to date a Mexican girl because Mexicans are fat and are illegals. I am not into that," then there's a problem. But other than that, it's not that we don't see the beauty in everyone. Saying the above statement is different from saying, "For some reason, I am just not physically attracted to people with medium-brown skin."

It's a matter of fact that certain races have general features. It's biological. For example, there are East Asians with double-eyelids and big eyes. But most naturally have one eyelid and small eyes. Saying, "I am not attracted to Asians because they are tiny nerds," is different from, "I am attracted to fairly large eyes."

Ultimately, it is not about "race" per-say. It's about looks. (Though we all know beauty is skin deep, blah blah.---true but let's not pretend like appearance has no value)

In these last few statements, I am not being rude though it may seem like it: Let me tell you that if you want to separate race and ethnicity, you fail. Race doesn't even really exist. Tell me what the racial equivalent of "Asian" is.

Eh, I should probably add this, because I don't appreciate argumentative people: For me, I have PHYSICAL preferences but am willing to give that up if I like a person enough in other aspects. Your argument that having a preference for a certain race and being racist is the same thing is ridiculous. I'm not attracted to most black guys. Does that mean that I think they're inferior to me as a person? No. They just don't do it for me. I've found some black guys to be physically attractive, yes, but I have never dated one.

Some guys prefer blondes over brunettes - that doesn't mean that they think that brunettes are inferior people. They just like blondes better. Are you attracted to morbidly obese people? No? So does that mean that you hate them and believe them to be inferior to you? No. It just means you don't want to date them.

As a person, no, but in terms of attractiveness yes. If you think that one is better (more attractive) then the one that is worse (less attractive) is inferior to the one that you prefer. Disliking morbidly obese people would not make me a racist because "morbidly obese" is not a race. Do you understand? I actually joke occasionally and refer to myself as an inverse racist, as I'm a white guy and I ONLY date black women. While I don't consider women of other races to be inferior to black women per se, I do find black women to be far more appealing overall. Thus, by definition, I'm not in fact a racist, I merely prefer the company of black women. In fact, it might be said I prefer the company of black people in general, as my best friend is a black man, and the church I attend is 99.5% composed of black people. You are actually about as clear as mud. I think you would be right in referring to yourself as an inverse racist (that doesn't mean you are a horrible person). By thinking one race is superior than another (in terms of attractiveness in this case) then that would be racist according to the definition because you exclude white women from your standard of beauty (i.e. the most attractive white woman can never be as attractive as the most attractive black woman).

The very great difference is, I see and admire the beauty of women of all races on a daily basis, it's just that at the end of the day I'm always most content in the company of a black woman. By your standards I'd be judged as socially intolerent (at the very least) for not including gay men in my search for a mate, and also if I were to elect going to the dog track rather than the horse track. Show me a black woman with red hair and porcelain doll like skin, and I'll say I prefer her over a white woman with dark skin and other colored hair. It's silly to assume people of a certain race will not share a good portion of physical attributes with one another; and simply having a preference that for the most part, doesn't involve a certain race, certainly doesn't make someone racist. It's like saying if you have a preference for blondes you believe redheads and brunettes are inferior, which simply is not the case. There are beautiful people in every race, and having a preference for a certain type is quite normal.

My main concern with this whole race preference thing is that the people that us it don't mean preference. They just say preference to be politically correct and not seem like a racist. If I prefer oranges over apples that doesn't mean that I won't eat or try apples or that they aren't delicious. Well if they would deny someone simply because of race then that is different. To me a preference is icing on the cake, and not a requirement. I don't doubt some racist people do use it as an excuse, but it is a legitimate argument for some as well.

If someone prefers the overall look of a certain race over the overall look of another race I would say that is racist, because in one's opinion, one race is more superior than another (at least when it comes to appearance in this particular example). If someone preferred dark skinned girls, and therefore had no preference for white people, but for almost any other race, I don't think we'd even be having the argument. You like what you like, you prefer what you prefer. It's how you react, your actions and words that make or break you as far as being racist. Having a preference for dark skinned girls would not be racist because girls from all races can have dark skin and also dark skin is not a race, that is a feature. The whole point is basically arguing traits and characteristics, because as I said before races share them in common, So it still fits, that was my whole point. If someone preferred dark skinned girls therefore avoided the majority of whites and many asians, we wouldn't be having this discussion, because it would be more apparent preferences simply aren't no matter how you want to paint it racist. And I never said you had a racial bias, simply that you're probably someone that has experienced this preference bias and assume it's racist. I think you are misunderstanding the terms preference and racism.

say I like both strawberry and orange sherbet ice cream. I like the taste of strawberry more, so I prefer it. I have nothing against sherbet at all, it is still very good, but I prefer strawberry. I don't even believe that strawberry is superior to sherbet, I realize that both are ice cream, and neither one is different from the other apart from taste. I just happen to find that I like the taste of strawberry more than orange sherbet.

If I were referring to people of different "races" it would not be a racist comment. Racism is the belief that one race is superior, or inferior, to the others, which is not the case. Having a preference for one over another, or all others isn't racist as long as you believe them all to be equal in the first place. However, if you think that one is superior, or one is inferior, then it becomes not a matter of preference, and instead a matter of racism.

Just because I prefer something does not mean I believe it is superior. I recognize that most ice cream is made from the same stuff, just with flavoring added. For all intents and purposes, it is exactly the same stuff, with the only difference being taste, which is only a matter of opinion. There is no "superior" ice cream, all ice cream is the same. I'm saying that in YOUR OPINION and accordingly to your tastes, one is superior and another is inferior (if you would like them EQUALLY) In my fair opinion asian guys are just as attractive as white guys. However, in another person's biased opinion, white may be more attractive than asian. Just because they have a biased opinion doesn't mean that in reality, asian guys are truly less valuable than white guys.

I prefer white guys, I know that nothing makes them inherently better than blacks, asians, lationos, native americans, etc. but I prefer them. People's perception about things don't change, race preference is one of them. You can always say there're people who don't fit into the racial stereotypes. yes, there are always exceptions. But the thing is, people's perception is not built from exceptions.

I guess when people say " I don't date such and such race" simply means he's not attracted to certain qualities which the marjority of that race possesses. And when you see some girls of that race, you unconsciously block out the romance possibilities in your head.

Yeah I'm not saying that people with racial preferences think that the race they're unattracted to are human trash, they just think one race is more superior than another (in terms of attractiveness). Yes, the people that choose to only date within their race are racist. However people in homogeneous societies get a pass because they are unable to date anyone outside of their race. Also social factors come into play as well. So the people who will date a black person for fear that their family will abandon them also get a pass (even though that's a little weak minded). My argument is a valid argument but racism is so taboo that of course no one's going to admit to it.

lol why is it almost always women who get offended over somebody's personal dating preferences being 'racist'? sorry, but most people just help but be either attracted or not attracted to specific physical features that are often associated with a specific race.

Take me for example. I generally find it hard to be attracted to a guy who is my skin tone or darker (I'm brown by the way). And yes, I also am a sucker for light colored eyes and hair (brown is OK). But which race of men often naturally have those features? Yes, white men. And that is who I tend to be attracted to sexually and romantically. Of course, I find men of other backgrounds attractive, like East Asian men and some latinos, but it's not my first choice

It's hard for me to understand that perspective as someone who has NO preference that is related to race. I prefer a smart, caring, kind, loyal woman. But care nothing of what her skin color is.

What you are attracted to has little to nothing to do with your genetics. By saying that you must believe that everyone in one race are attracted to the same thing. Do not blame racism on genetics.

Your argument that everyone belonging to a certain race would be attracted to the same thing is highly illogical. How could different genetics make everyone attracted to the same thing? You assume everyone of a certain race has the same genes. That is not the case. Otherwise we'd look identical to each other (though not necessarily act the same due to environmental factors).

Lol what the hell? I didn't say everyone of my "race" is attracted to the same thing. ANY PERSONfrom ANY race has thier own personal preferences. How is what I'm sexually attracted to not my genetics? I can't choose what I'm attracted to. I just am attracted to what I am, I don't know why. This is not racism in my opinion. I am not referring to personal preferences in my question. I am specifically referring to racial preferences (sorry if you didn't catch that). You are racist to girls you are unattracted to by excluding them from your dating pool. I never said someone who prefers one skin color over another was racist. In my opinion preferring tawny over olive skin is NOT racist,
