My girlfriend hit me in the face with a TV remote and knocked my front tooth out and split my lip? Should I break up with her over that?

Me and my girlfriend were arguing about what to watch on TV. She wanted to watch a reality TV show and I wanted to watch my sports. Long story short, it became very heated (not physical at all) just name calling and arguing back and forth. Then out of nowhere she threw the TV remote at my face, hitting me in the mouth which knocked out my front tooth and split my lip open.

Seeing as it is my apartment, and my TV that I paid for (she doesn't own it), I made sure I had my sports on as she had been watching TV for an hour prior to that, and I had just got back from work and wanted to unwind. She knew I would want to watch sports so put up a deliberate argument to stop me watching it, and to get her own way. Like it's her way or the highway. She would be happy to sit in silence, as long as I don't get to put my sports on.

Anyway I had to go to the emergency room, get 2 stitches in my lip and book an appointment with the dentist. She has apologised to me and insists she is sorry and regrets it, but I don't know. Not sure what to do? What do you guys reckon?

That's inexcusable, break up with her.

You both seem quite childish. Why would you play on each other's nerves deliberately? Also, there can be other reasons why you deserve to watch the TV but the fact that it's your house and your TV won't take you far in a relationship. She obviously didn't mean to break your tooth. Sometimes I also get very irritated and could throw something, but I am a very loving girlfriend in general and that kind of irritation doesn't happen with the right person in my case. Try to figure it out, obviously you have bigger problems than that incident, which is only a result.

I should probably point out that we have only been together for 3 weeks, and she moved into my apartment 1 week ago. And she has already assaulted me with a TV remote, breaking my tooth, just because I wanted to watch MY TV, in MY apartment. After getting home from work. She doesn't even work, which is why she is living with me now because she can't afford her rent. If I knocked her tooth out with a remote I would probably go to jail...

Yikes, I'm sorry you had to go through that. Honestly, someone who uses violence to cope with emotions will probably continue to do so. In other words, this will probably happen again, if not escalate. If this is a new relationship, it's only going to get worse and you are probably seeing her true colors. If you have been together for some time, keep an eye on signs of an abusive partner. Do they get physically aggressive often and quickly? How about verbal abuse? It's better to be safe than sorry, but of course it is ultimately up to you.

I’d be pissed. I wouldn’t break up over the incident because it does sound like it’s an accident, but she overall sounds inconsiderate, demanding and petty, all good reasons to not be with someone. So again, the incident specifically not a reason to break up, but I would consider who she is and how she acts as a girlfriend and if you have reasons there, then yes break up.

Sounds to me like the kind of relationship that will end anyway.. relationships should be harmony, not violent.

Even if she regrets, she used physical violence and hurt you. There's no excuse for that. It shows she can't control her anger... also, her attitude was selfish, manipulative and unconsiderate.
