Why do people willingly put themselves in difficult situations and then complain?

ChronicThinker
For those of you who know, I have a narcissist series where I talk about growing up with a narcissist and dealing with abuse by my mother. Which, I intend to finish eventually.

For reasons I won't be specific about, I had to get into contact with my narcissistic mother. I saw her today and she spent the entire time bitching about how awful her life is because she continues to raise my 30-something-year-old brother who refuses to work. She won't kick him out, won't force him to get a job, won't make him do ANYTHING for himself, yet she tries to not only complain to me about it but also tries to imply she's in a bad financial situation since she had to support me AS A CHILD.

I pretty much ended it there, but it does beg the question to me why some people (narcissist or not) put themselves in a situation and then bitch about it.
