Why some people choose to suffer in the relationship?

I met this guy online. He talk about his relatioship. He is no longer happy with her. He doesn't love her anymore because she cheated him not just twice. His girlfriend doesn't treat him fairly. She controls him including his social media. This lady owns him like a dog who has no freedom. Yet, he still choose to stay with her. He said he can't leave her because he don't want to break her heart and ruin her reputation.

I feel sorry for him..

There are basically 2 types of people that will do that.

1. The ones that lack character, are weak and that don't dare to change anything.

2. The ones that are too comfortable with a specific situation and don't want to go through the burden of having to separate, be it because they share costs of a place, have a mortgage or are financially involved in such a way that it will create problems to separate.

I don't believe that he does not want to ruin her reputation or her heart. If he was as miserable as he pretends to be, then these should be his last concern and not the first one.

I was in a LDR for 3 years. She put very little effort into the relationship. I was really miserable the whole time. Even when I would travel 1500 miles to see her she really did not do much to make it special.
I think on some level I knew it would never work out. We even talked about getting married. I think that maybe I was on this path and had to see it through to some kind of conclusion.

actually yes. I agonized about it for a couple of months and finally called her one Saturday night and broke up with her over the phone.
