Would you marry a professional athlete?

Question

A (passive aggressive) woman I was talking to today told me that "no matter how great of a guy he is, if you marry a man who plays sports, you'll be divorced."

Now my boyfriend has been bringing up marriage to me quite a lot lately. I trust him with all my heart and he's the type of guy I couldn't have even dreamed up.

I know this lady was trying to be rude, but the whole 'he could be a great guy now, but you'll get divorced' thing is playing with my head. And I need some input to pacify me :)

Question is in the title...

it's liek saying you shouldn't marry a baker, because the steam that comes from the oven will give him the same kind of character or something.

I think that this woman is just a very simple person.

Don't rely on that sort of things.

You don't want to be like her.

It doesn't go really deep, wouldn't you agree?

I think the example of her is a perfect example of the type of people you should not trust in general, they are not the kind of people I would like to talk to.

Obviously, this is prejeduice that's not based on any hard fact.

Let's say that her man ahs been an athlete, adn she's had this.

Because of that, she dislikes athletes more than other people.

This is not very developed behavior .

I would like to compare it to this:

You don't listen well at all to something that a person is telling you.

If you would not have liked the conversation or the person, you should not have gotten into the conversation, or say that you have other things to do, which is never a lie.

But counting yourself as superior to that person in that way BEFORE you ahve even heard the rest, is the same behavior as a dog.

A dog cannot listen well to another person too, that's a human capacity.

Don't lower your standards to animal level, like that woman does.

It's shameful in my eyes to have that sort of behavior , and I would not like to indulge myself in any affairs with that sort of people.

I see that as being respectless.

Because, you would like others to listen well to you too wouldn't you?

It's called RESPECT FOR OTHERS, in this case, it can be compared to being able to imagine the feelings of others.

The more you can imagine the feelings or thoughts of others, the better conversations with people in general will go, taht's what I think.

Obviously the woman who you talked to has the level of a dog in the prospective I talked about, given her HUGE generalisation.

You don't want to lower yourself to such a level, TRUST me, there are better people walking the world, and I vene doubt if her type can change her ways, because she might have the character that in general is just unable to imagine these sort of things.

I think what she means is that with him being an athlete girls are going to be swanning about round him, giving him attention, potentially persuading him to get up to mischief! :) !

Wouldn't surprise me also if she's been watching the news and has now deemed 'all athletes' untrustworthy! Tiger Woods, David Beckham has had many accusations in the past, footballers over here are forever in the papers for being caught meeting up with escorts in hotels so I assume it's the same other there? She's simply painted every sports person with the same brush, birds of a feather etc

It's no lie that they do get lots of attention and are more likely to make wrong decisions because of the amount of women throwing themselve's at them BUT there are 10000 faithful athletes to every 1 that gets caught... the 10000 are the ones that actually love thier partners, if your lad's talking marriage then he's obviousley took quite a liking to you :)

Would I marry a professional athlete?... if I could become a house husband, spend my day with the kids, play with them, watch football, a few beers whilst she's out 'althleting' all the money... yes I would ;) hahahaha

It is true that professional athletes are up there for more likely to cheat because of fans and girls throwing themselves at them but if you really trust him with all you heart you should not punish him for something he hasn't done. You have to give him enough rope to hang himself with. I know that's awful but the saying is true. If he loves you as much as you love him than you will have no problem. But you should voice your concerns to him, tell him what the lady said and tell him where you stand on the whole cheating thing. If he knows that he could loose the love of his life than maybe he will think twice about it.

With all that being said even people who love other people do stupid things. My boyfriend cheated on me and said he was really scared to tell me because he didn't want to loose me because I voiced my concerns about cheating, but we got through it cause we love each other. Love is the greatest thing, and people tell me time and time again that he doesn't love you if he cheated, but I have done things that I promised I would never do and I love him to death. You just have to trust him and know that the love you have for each other will keep you both happy.

The only professional athelete I know is married but he hit on me like crazy- I'm engaged so nothing happened and I don't know if it would of gone further if I had been single... That being said, these guys are used to girls and fans throwing themselves at him and yeah he probably flirts. But you know him, if you have doubts in your heart then you're not ready yet. But I imagine you've been together awhile and if he hasn't cheated so far then he probably won't.

And if you look at it from his side he might be worried you'll cheat during away games or something.

Everyone has fears or worries and squashing them shows you're ready. Unless you know that woman who told you those things very well(you have a close personal realationship and she has your best interests at heart) and what she told you happened to her personally then she really had no buisness telling you gossip you could read in magazines. Men everywhere cheat and so do women- famous peoples affairs get put on the Internet and regular peoples affairs aren't.

So she can't say that it won't work out, can she? Don't hold back on your relationship with this guy just because her words are getting to your head. If you love him, then marry him one day! Obviously if he's bringing it up, he loves and wants to marry you too.

The chances of falling in love with a professional athlete are slim, but if I ever did, I would marry him. Why? Because I loved him.

well first off your a def. beauty. I mean he's a really lucky guy. just out of curiousity what professional athlete is he? you kinna got a bit of an eva longoria thing going on, but she thought she was gonna be married together forever to tony parker-they were so head over heels now obviously they are divorced. when he says he wants to marrry you he's probly being sincere and luvs u. the thing is these athletes almost all of em...sooner or later get egos bigger than crowd stadiums and they have beauties like you all the time throwing themselves t these pro athletes for numerous reasons.  Now if you knew and dated this guy way before he was famous at all, then you may have better chances of m stayin faithful  because he knows you love him for him not  because he's famous.  personally if I was a pro athlete and all these hotties wanted to f*** me all the time I honestly don't know if I could ever get married unless it was a little later in life after I felt I played the field(no pun intended). but obviously I dontknow the guy so can't say too much. I hope I'm wrong and hell propose and it will last forever. realistically though with the divorce rate over 50 percent, infidelities, and that  even higher with celebs, pro athletes the odds are not in your favor.  just follow your heart and for your benefit make sure you do not sign a pre-nup-hahahah. it helps too if he's your best friend to be loyal to you. but ya the majoirty of pro athletes are ego manics and players(no pun intneded) and just wanna do a bunch of hot chicks...so use your discretion and your heart...good luck.

It depends upon who the guy is and what sport he plays...but MAINLY on who the guy is.

I can't tell you about the nature of your guy.

But what I can tell you is that is that politicians, lawyers, and rock stars are all more likely to cheat than athletes.

The one good thing about being an athlete is those guys have to build up a lot of endurance, which could help a marriage last.

Also, stress is one of the big things that makes relationships fall apart and causes people to cheat, and sports are a healthy way of dealing with stress. However, that may not be true when someone reaches a certain level where the sports cause more stress than they relieve. But I think you'd have to be at a very high level to be at that point.

Mostly it all boils down to character and what kind of person he was before you married him. If the guy has trouble keeping his paws off other women before you married him, then he will probably have trouble after marriage as well. But if he seems like a decent guy now, and you've known him long enough to know this is what he's really like, then it's likely he will always remain that way.

That woman is just bitter. There are plenty of examples of class-act athletes who are well educated and family oriented.

Sure, you have guys like Shaq who are blabbering baffoons with glass egos. They give athletes a bad name.

Then you have Tim Duncan, a class-act, franchise star who rivals Shaq in terms of success, and after all these years he remains a soft-spoken, reserved family guy. He's the ultimate professional on and off the court.

Both are athletes in the same sport with similar successes yet are totally different characters. Would I marry an athlete? Hypothetically, yes.

Honestly, marrying a professional athlete is not easy, on both sides. It takes a lot of commitment.. Why? Because, he could be on the roads and away from home fro a long time, it a full time job and plenty stress can come from it, specially if you have children one day.. But, that doesn't means won't work. If you willing to stick around through the ups and downs, like any relationship, you guys work at it and make the small moments count, and treasure each other, then you guys will be fine.. a lot of marriages these days, people give up on, too easily, marriage never will be easy, but it worth it. ( I mean fighting for the one you love, and doing anything to make it work. Sounds worth it to me?)

That's where being a good judge of character comes in... Choose to be with a truly great, trustworthy guy, that loves you, and no matter what, he'll stay by your side. You just have to know what to look for and how to choose the right man.

Marriage is very difficult to begin with no matter what, so add in fame and availability of an athlete and I think it becomes more difficult. That does not mean your marriage is destined for divorce.

With all of the celebrity infidelity in the news lately, the news was loaded with stats of males who cheat, not athletes or the rich & famous, just all married men. Are you ready for this? 80% of all married men cheat at least once. But and that's just everyday Joe.

So just go into it knowing that Barbie is going to be there, ready, willing and able. It takes a man with great values and morals to say no each & ever time. And jealously & suspicion have no place in a marriage.

All said, if you love him, marry him. If you aren't sure...test the waters first. See if the boat floats. And if you do marry him, get a d*mn good prenup in your favor that mentions if he strays. lol

First, I'd like to say, respect your elders. Even if they give sh*tty advice or whatnot. But if this lady is much older than you, I really don't think she was being inconsiderate or negative towards your feelings. I really think, sometimes people just want to give out advice. They hope not to see others make the same mistakes they once made themselves. Sometimes they can get a bit too vindictive about it though. Is it really true about what she said? Not at all. It's great to enjoy and have hobbies, especially sports. This allows him to have time for himself, and you as well of course. Being an athlete bares no correlation to how well they will be in relationships. Other factors determine that. So don't let snobby people bring you down. Be considerate to peoples wisdom, and try to see it from there view, but never think it hits home with your own situation.

If a cute athlete female came in my life, we hooked up, I would watch her every game, practice and so on, because I love people that are willing to put effort into their dreams and don't like those who are just tag alongs. Sure why not? There's a 50% chance of any marriage ending in divorce. That's just a chance you have to be willing to take when you decide to get married. He's (most likely) not going to suddenly change once you are married. If he is truly a great guy now, he'll probably be a great guy after marriage. Sure, there are other factors that could end a marriage, but if both of you will put in the effort to make a marriage work, then you'll be fine.

I would never marry a guy that spends more time away from me than with me. I require a certain level of attention otherwise I get sad. Nor would I marry a guy that is a prominent public figure. I do not like the attention. So that crosses PRO anything off the list for me.

yea I think it would be complicated, he might be great etc. but traveling, fans (girls) or just groupies all of that will prob. make you doubt him even if he gives you no reason. Dating one is hard, and I have tried, have friends who have however that's is just college players, it was still difficult. I think marriage is hard itself, throw in players who are attractive to the girls forget it, personally I would probably doubt marrying any players

A jerk is a jerk wether he's an athelte or not, money and fame only emphasize  who you are, if you have a good man, then it is worth it!One thing, you need to be pretty secure and have great confidence in yourself.
