No eye contact, no interest or just shy?

Hi everyone, there is this girl from college that I saw in a group. When outside my class, I notice someone quite similar to her. Although I am not 100% sure that is her because of masks. Nevertheless, the eyes and the hair were quite similar. I was waiting in the hall when she passes and tried to identify if it was her or not. The problem was she avoid eye contact. The first time she passes she went for the bathroom and the second time when she was leaving I could saw her spotted me that's when I saw her eyes. The big question is was she just shy because didn't know me or just not interest?

When people don't make eye contact, it is usually because they are not interested.

I, for example, I make eye contact for a half a second but that is solely to assess a person and whether I know him/her. If I don't know that person, then I move onto the next person to try to identify him/her.

Next time I see a person I identified before, then the eye contact lasts a fraction of a second.

If a person is not interested, his/her facial expression or eyes will remain neutral and not give a hint of interest.

Thank you for your answer! I understand what you are saying but that is merely to identify persons. What I am talking about is more of a dating scene. From what i've experienced when people are interested they generally hold eye contact for more time. In this case that didn't happen as I mention above. I notice her looking from behind that's when I saw her eyes. Yes, she might only be trying to identify me. What I wanted to know is if there is some sort of attraction.

A shy person would try to steal a glance while you are not looking but a person that is not interested is going to look at you and then if there is nothing that attracts her, then she will just do as I said. It could also be that she is just busy thinking of something else and does not pay attention to your attempt to have eye contact.

Makes sense. From what I understood you look to people in order to identify them and whether you know them or not, in a way to not being rude to pass by a known people and don't say anything. What I am talking about is more on a romantic way/attraction when you walk by someone you either:
1) make eye contact for a short time because your are not interested
2) Make and contact and hold because you find attractive and you want him to approach you
3) you make no eye contact, i don't know why that happen
Given all the above, do you think I should approach her anyways even without clear signs of eye contact? do you really believe that she was just busy or is shy? If you were in that position what would you like the guy to do?

So, basically, you are the one that is interested and you want to know whether this interest is reciprocated.

The only sure way is to go and ask her directly. My feeling is that if she does not seek eye contact with you, then she is not interested herself.

Thank you for your answer! If you take a look to other answers some people argue that if she does not make any kind of eye contact means she has no interested, which approaching is a waste of time. Others think I should go anyways because thats the only way to know 100% sure if she is interested ir not.

What I've come to learn is that nothing means anything but verbal communication. That's it. Even if she winks right at you, assume nothing.

Thank you for your answer! I understand what you say however, prolonged eye contact is s sign that might be interest. When people likes something they like, generally they tend to stare for example when an exotic car passes down the street people look at it ultimo disappears unless they have no interest. Although she might not interested at all, it's true.

Ok but consider the possibility that she is interested in looking but nothing more. Maybe she doesn't want you to make advices even though she is interested in you. My point is you don't want to act on a whim or a guess but I'm sure you know that already.

Yes I think you should approach her and that's pretty much it. There's just no reason to speculate over non verbal ques or on why she may not want to make eye contact. That's your brain trying to think to hard. Talk to her period.

Thank you for your answer. When leaving her class for the second time I think I saw her looking at me that's when I saw her eyes but rapidly she looked away. Do you really think that? Like she has other things on her mind? that way, I should approach anyways even without clear eye contact
