How would you destroy a gun. Burn it. Dismantle and recycle it, or jam it and take it to a gun buy back?

Depends on what I would want to do with it.

Put it into collection? => Pay professional to disable it (I guess by melting together the trigger and/or chamber?)

To get rid of old and unwanted stuff? => Bring to to collection point at some of local police departments/gun store?

Found old but functional gun in my basement and I don't have permit for it because it was my grandfather's? => Wait for regular amnesty by police stations that allows punishment-free submission of illegally owned weapons not used to commit any crime.

UK wise, you contact your local police and inform them what you have, ideally serial numbers.

just be aware, the police do get nervous picking up unknown weapons.

Just ask the police, they'll happily destroy it for you. It's common for people to find guns belonging to deceased relatives, the police would rather have them than they fall into criminal hands.
