and everyone does it, men and women... and in all kinds of circumstances, not just when you want to be noticed by the other gender and in terms of attraction

even animals do it..

I do it cause I'm just friendly, I greet him and say hello. If its someone I've already said hi to for the day, I don't say or do anything... like say my boss at work.

I don't know. I think it probably has something to do with survival instinct. They want to be aware of their surroundings.

Whereas I can sense when someone walks into the room, but I don't look up because I just don't care.

Never noticed that, probably because society encourages men to be chasers, so women feel a boost in confidence when they catch a guy's attention, it's a sign that she's a desirable person. LOL my words o explain this.
