If I think that I'd have a chance I'd try anyway.
I'm *not* a good swimmer.
But at least I *can* swim.
And maybe I could help someone staying above the water till someone else arrives that could help us both.

That said, it depends on the situation.
I know that I'd be no use to anyone somewhere with strong currents or where the waves are beating against the rocks.
And I'm not going to risk my life like that if I think my chances are low unless the person at risk is the love of my life or my child etc.
Basically someone I care way more than normal for.

I would educate my husband before this happens. In fact, I won't go to the beach without rescue equipment. The rip tide is one thing.
A drowner's reflex is another.
Trained professionals such as lifeguards may avoid directly going in and instead use road.

Lifeguards isn't a thing here.
Instead people are expected to know how to save themselves and others.
Everyone has ro take swimming classes for instance.
Unfortunately my family was moving at the time.
From a school about to have swimming classes to a school that was done with them and working on intermediary and advanced skills...

They're great if they're nearby...
But our coastline is among the longest in the world...
You can't always expect one nearby.

Sure. But don't think being a strong swimmer will always save your life from water 😉 . It will not. Water will always be stronger and a destroyer of the cities. Strong swimmers, fire fighters drown too depending to the type of water that decides to form on a particular day.

True, but if you learn to understand it and don't fight against it using up your oxygen but instead respect it you can usually find a solution.

I think that knowledge is the best solution in the wast majority of situations and can be relied on even when equipment can't.

Also I believe that the normal currents here are different from what's normal where you live.

There's less risk of being pulled under or away from land in our waters by the currents.

I'd be more worried by being smashed against the rocks ashore or freezing to death in the cold waters then actually *drowning*.

Absolutely.. If travelling, people should be educated about the area.
Water is just something I don't play with. Saw a diving instructor get eaten by a great white shark, so random, so even that is a thing. The first line of safety is not going into riskier than usual water :)

There's no dangerous sharks in our waters.
There's like one fish that might sting you with a poisonous horn or something if you don't watch where you step on the bottom, but they're rarely close enough to shore to be a issue.
Our jellyfish might sting, but they're never fatal.
Our few sharks are small and harmless.
There's no polar bears on the mainland.
And orcas are too big to get too close to shore where people bade, and they don't think of humans as food and honestly often avoid us anyway.

So yeah, the only real danger here is the water itself and the rocks ashore.

In every situation you needs to evalute risk before acting. Trying and failing is usually better than not trying at all. The risk would be you drowning too. Not you failing to save them.

It's just a bad blunt way of saying that a panic person would most likely drown you when trying to save themselves. Instead of letting you save them.

Well, you can't be sued for failing at saving someones life. It's called the good Samaritan law. It protects you from being sued, while trying to save someones life. You also can't get sued for NOT trying to save someones life, however, people will look at you and wonder why you didn't
