Is it normal to be so painfully lonely in your twenties?

Is there any way to be happy with your own company? I’m not interested in getting rid of the loneliness as much as I am interested in being happy with it.

It's not uncommon. As you move out of the school years and work and family life begin to take center stage for most of your peers, you often see a decline in social stuff, especially if you're unattached. It even shows up in specific gatherings; over New Years' one year, I was out with a group of six others, three couples, and boy HOWDY, does it feel isolating to be a seventh wheel when everyone else is in "couple mode".

I WOULD suggest trying to find some local people to interact with (Meetup groups are good for this; remember that you can befriend people even if your ages are wildly different), but if you're looking to be okay with just yourself, then the best thing I can suggest is to be the kind of person you'd like to spend time with. As trite as it may sound, there's real advantage in being admirable, even if it's only to yourself. Knowing that you're the kind of person you respect and admire can be a big boost to self-esteem.

Putting aside the fact that we're social creatures and that we actually do need some degree of social interaction to be fully happy.

Something you can do is sit in silence with your thoughts. And in that emotional state of boredom and disease they're going to have certain emotions and thoughts pop up

It's in this moment that you need to bring your attention to the thought and the feeling to address them. Because of the day anyone who cannot be alone is usually dealing with the fact that they are running from something

When you're constantly seeking a distraction in some way it's because you're running away from something. If you can't sit in silence and be comfortable for a bit you have something that needs addressing

I understand you, I suffer from loneliness too. It's not about not having anyone but a condition of the person. I struggle to feel happy too actually, guess it's gonna be difficult to make em coexist. Personally I am not sure about how happiness feels like, it's been too long since I've felt it last time
