Thanks for advice. I’m about to turn 20 and I’m starting to realize that I haven’t had to be self sufficient and kinda suffer from moral hazard. I live in America but My parents came from Ethiopia and the culture has strong emphasis on motherhood. This means mother basically does a lot of the house work and heavily involved, and I really appreciate my Mother. But I can’t overrely on her. Hopefully she’s ok with it haha

They're completely inept and unable to handle life.

I should qualify my perception of "overbearing mother" is a mother who insists on doing things for her son instead of teaching him to do it himself.

They can't clean, so their place is a mess. They can't cook, so they always eat processed foods. They can't make appointments or complete complex tasks.

Unless the boys decide to grow up and become self-sufficient, they're gonna be stuck as manchildren. And, un/fortunately, their privilege allows most of them never to grow up so they're stuck as incel manchildren their whole lives.

Get out from under your mother. Cut yourself off from your parents and siblings financially and help-wise.

Give yourself 2-5 years to live on your own, paying all your own bills, doing all your own cleaning. Learn to use a laundry machine, a dishwasher, toilet cleaner. Set a cleaning routine and stick to it.

Learn to manage your own appointments and health. Schedule and keep doctors, psychotherapist, and any other health appointments you need.

Cut or limit contact with your mother (also, this will prevent her from becoming a terrible MIL to your future wife).

Find competent older men to mentor you and teach you how to be a self-sufficient adult.

Therapy will really help you calibrate to what's actually normal versus what your mother has raised you to think is normal.
